1998 V70 GLT Computer Reset for Emissions
Re: 1998 V70 GLT Computer Reset for Emissions
Yeah I have not had the AC on at all. I have no clue as to what I could be doing wrong. I have driven it all over the place just normally, as well as the prescribed cycle, a whole bunch since putting the new battery in and my OBDII scanner shows 5 not ready monitors still. Mom and Dad will be leaving here Thursday morning early and I'm just hoping that the 500 mile trip home will finally do the trick. I was led to believe that stop and go drives mixed with freeway driving would do it but it hasn't happened yet. Is there any way to diagnose if it may be something actually wrong that is preventing the monitors from running? The car seems to be running great. The ABS and Tracs-Off lights are on... I was under the impression that the ABS module is a frequent failure point on these cars and shouldn't have any relevance to the emissions monitors. Is that correct?

Correct about the ABS.
You don't have the defrost on, do you? That will turn on the AC.

I really don't think so... The fan switch is set to 0, the AC switch is set to off... I'll go double check. Yeah, defrost definitely not on.erikv11 wrote:

I had a bear of a time getting my readiness flags to set complete when i first acquired my 98 s70t5. Within 50 miles all had set complete aside from Front Oxygen Sensor and Evap. I slogged on through two more drive cycles, then 300 miles on top of that. They still hadn't set ready.
I pulled the front Oxygen Sensor out one morning and found it fouled from the PO running the engine lean too much. Replaced it. I also found some hairline cracks in an evap hose.
10 miles after replacing those two items the ready flags for 02 and evap set. I doubt it was a coincidence and mind you never once did I set any check engine lights.
In your shoes, I would be going over inch by inch the various systems you're not setting ready for.

It'd be nice if even one of the other monitors would run. I have been worried that the oxygen sensor(s) might be fouled from the amount of oil that ran through the exhaust when the turbo seal blew. The guy my dad takes the car to normally specializes in Volvo and seems to think that with a can of strong fuel system cleaner having run through the car and a few hundred miles that all that oil should burn out and the O2 sensor(s) should be fine. unfortunately there's no way I'm going to get this solved before they leave.
Just so I understand it... Would the readiness monitors not having run prevent the car from producing codes on those systems? For instance if there was a fault in the evap or system with a leak or faulty valve, would those codes be prevented from showing up? Are any of the monitors dependent on others having run? In other words, is there a monitor that must run first in order for any of the subsequent monitors to run? If so maybe that's where I can start the hunt. I'm not going to have much time for this today but if I do get a chance to check I'd like to.

What I know is only from my own observations. Correlation is not causation. When I've reset the ecu my component, misfire, and fuel system ready flags set immediately on start up.
In my case, I was happy with my hypothesis that my oxygen sensor and evap systems were marginal, perhaps not running well enough to set ready, but not poor enough to throw codes. Your mileage may vary.
I would imagine the ecu can and will throw codes regardless of readiness if the conditions are met for a code.

I am at a loss. My parents drove 500 miles yesterday. Dad just went out to check the car. Plugged in the OBDII scanner and all five monitors are still not ready. I'd safely say that's near 1000 miles since putting the new battery in. My parents bought the car with about 40,000 miles on it. It now has about 170,000. They say it has more power now than it ever has, and that the fuel mileage is actually better than it ever has been, even when they first bought it. They averaged 28 mpg yesterday. I can't understand why NONE of the monitors would have run yet.
Dad just called. He took it to the smog shop down south and had it smogged. He said he's not sure if they somehow forced the monitors or if they had just coincidentally reset by the time he got there. Either way it's over and done with. Thanks everyone for your help. I wish I'd have been able to solve the issue myself. I blame myself a bit for the goat rodeo this was because I had to disconnect the battery while doing the major work on the turbo, PCV, and coolant systems. Either way it's a happy ending because the car can be registered now!
