1998 v70 warped flywheel?

Post by darylrobert »

So I am fairly certain now I have a warped flywheel, the problem started a few months ago and I first tried to ignore it. From releasing the clutch in first gear there is a engine shudder, it seems worse when hot...there is also a shudder when down shifting to 2nd. I was hoping it was the engine mounts and checked the top stabilizer finding the firewall mount had completely failed.

New firewall mount installed and the shudder was reduced but still there so I replaced the gearbox link brace and also the main two mounts, the rear mount had also failed. The rear mount on a turbo car is really difficult to replace, I had to remove the bracket because the turbo almost sits ontop of the mount...anyway a very little shudder remains if I feather the clutch..if I give it some gas and let the clutch out fast its ok but will sometime get tyre spin on a hill.

here is a pic of the rear mount that had failed, the massive hole wasn't visable from under the car and cant be seen from top because of the turbo.

How many miles (km) are on the car? I got about 236k miles (380k km) out of my first clutch but in my case it was the throwout bearing that failed. The clutch was almost to the rivets anyway.

What usually makes them grabby like that is contamination from something like a leaky rear main seal or an input shaft seal on the transmission itself. In any case the fix is always the same, replace the clutch, throwout bearing, and the pressure plate. At that time I always replace the RMS even if it isn't leaking and get the flywheel surfaced. If there was contamination the source would need to be located with certainty and the leak fixed. On a '98 you have an internal slave cylinder and that too could be leaking a bit but you should have noticed that since you would need to top off the brake fluid regularly.

+1 on the oil-contaminated clutch disk.
The axial (throw) bearing and the release bearing are probably gone at this mileage.
I have never seen a warped flywheel to be the cause of your symptoms. In fact, if it were that much warped to create shudder, it would also have axial imbalance sufficient to cause engine vibrations even with the clutch released.

On my earlier car (the 340 DL rear wheel drive), I had a failing prop shaft (worn splines at the clutch) that started with slight shudder upon take off which gradually worsened until eventually the splines gave in completely and left me stranded (very luckily) about 100 meters from my house :)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
