1996 850 coolant leak from coolant pipe

My 1996 850 Turbo is leaking coolant, and I have identified the spot. I am just not sure what to do about it. It is leaking from a metal coolant pipe that lower expansion tank hose is connected to. From what I can tell there is a hole is the metal pipe. It does not appear to be leaking from a rubber hose connection. I saw steam shooting out of the middle of the metal pipe. What can be done in this situation? I am attaching some pictures to help clarify the spot.

Probably poor maintenance from previous owner, pipe now corroded through.

3. You have a few options:

a. Take it out, slice the bad part and join with rubber hose.

b. Buy used from ebay for $40 (search "Volvo turbo coolant pipe" and find appropriate part).

c. Buy new from Volvo for $115, Part #11 in diagram below:

Use new gaskets if you replace the piping system.


PS: for now, if you are desperate and need the car to go to work...cut a hose lengthwise. This hose is most likely either 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch type. The place the uncut part of the hose over the leak, then clamp it. Then test it.
Again, this is only a temp fix.

These cars a like a box of Cracker Jacks. You never know what you'll get when you look inside.

How in the world does that pipe get a hole in it?

I don't think fixing that pipe is a big rush. It should not BURST like a hose would. Just keep the coolant bottle filled up in the AM and you should be able to deal with it when you can, soon.

If it only leaks under pressure, you might even clean the snot out of it , staying away from the pinhole, and put a 1 inch JB weld putty repair on it, while you wait for a pick and pull part to arrive in your doorstep.

I doubt that metal pipe has a pinhole as it's only fault at this point.

Thanks for all the input. I just ordered a used one on eBay for $38 like cn90 recommended. I probably can't blame the previous owner for the poor maintenance. I've owned it 8 years and haven't driven it a lot this past year. I usually ride my motorcycle, which is what I'll be riding this week. The expansion tank was leaking so I just replaced it the two hoses connected to it and flushed the system. I guess I flushed away some corrosion that opened up the leak.

its been nearly three years, how did you go replacing the pipe?..mine is leaking in that exact same spot..i tried removing it yesterday, got all 3 bots out (very tricky) but the pipe was still stuck so I decided to give up.
