Get your backyard mechanic to swap out the tranny for $500 plus $300 for a scrap yard tranny.

but since you haven't mentioned it,
I've got to ask... How's the fluid level?

And this might be worth a fluid swap.
That's pretty simple and low budget.

Fluid seemed fine. I obv didnt drive 30 mins to test it but after 10 min drive to the mechanic first thing he did was pull the dip stick and fluid was pink. Are you suggesting draining and filling or just topping off? It happened when it should have been pretty cold still - morning start in cold weather and 1/2 mile from my house.

My first thought was low fluid, but like I said, that's pretty obvious.
The other possible "easy fix" may be something bigger that it should
be floating around in there and clogging something in the valve body.
A fresh transfusion of AT juice might flush it out. Just reaching, but
I hate to see any more of these cars forsaken...

First - Thanks to everyone here.

I kept at it and 3rd mechanic diagnosed a bad right front shaft from a broken bearing. I attached the bearing pic - may be tough to see but it is pretty nasty. This 3rd shop (transmission specialist) said he took it out and felt it was driving right but said he didnt think it was the transmission at all. Said he had his other mechanic take it out to just see if he was wrong without telling him why I brought it in and that mechanic confirmed that the transmission seemed fine. Both said it shifts fine. So they put it on the lift and front right tire was either spinning freely or not spinning at all (he was confusing me frankly) when it should not have been doing so. Front drive shaft and bearing replacement and I am off. First 3 miles of driving so far and all seems well. We will see if I was taken here or this was the issue.

I don't see how bad drive shaft bearing can cause transmission to slip.I don't see that it's felt appart too,blocking a drive shaft.
