Re: PCV System Kit Vs. Cleaning Ports?
Statistics show that the occurrence probability of those high-risk failures is directly proportional to the cost of an engine rebuild multiplied by the 3rd power of the owner's fear factor...
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

This reminds me of an ex-girl friend who used to code for Microsoft. Oh well, she would not believe that there exist engines with odd number of cylinders, and kept telling me I was wrong about my S60.abscate wrote:...Is it running on all five cylinders???
Finally I had to tell her that the fifth cylinder was added as a backup in case one of the other four should fail... to make the car more reliable.

Haha, I know! It's pretty funny.rspi wrote:It's funny how people drive with the system clogged or damaged for years and as soon as they learn about the issue, driving it 3 more days is detrimental.
I'd still like to replace the timing belt components before mine turns into my daily. PCV was done not too long after purchase!abscate wrote:Everyones fear factor is different. Some won't drive a newly purchased P80 until the change the unknown timing belt components. Others will drive them 50% past service interval.
Eeekks.

It's not very funny when one day the rear main seal is fine, but the next it is leaking.
We're not talking about a leaky oil filler cap seal here. If the PCV is badly clogged, the smart thing is to do something about it.
But maybe you would rather play PCV roulette, your call ...

The funny part is that people will go on acting like it's no big deal until they realize the extensive damage it can cause. You should get onto these issues quickly, not wait it out until you need to replace a rear main seal.erikv11 wrote:It's not very funny when one day the rear main seal is fine, but the next it is leaking.

Removal of oil dipstick is not needed, it may be left in, but loose (not pushed far enough to have it sealed by the o-rings).
This will allow the positive pressure to vent until the cause may be addressed.

Back to OP issue.
I'm guessing most of us could probably restore PCV function by cleaning th e OEM parts rather than replacing, I certainly could have on my 1999
Don't forget to check your block passage if you have sludging, though. I didn't as my sludging was so light after 175k miles.
I'm convinced the heated PCV on the 99+ car clogs a lot less, and that synthetic oil is your best friend on these cars.
On the minus side, getting the 99+ heated system off without breaking parts might be really tough.
