Will add some pics.
290,600 miles,
white/tan (leather in front seats pretty beat up).

HG starting to leak (bit of misfire/white smoke on cold starts)
Coolant in Cyl 3
Coolant in Cyl 3
new plugs (AP3923DP2 - $5/pr Amazon - with a $2/pair rebate!)
New coolant tank (Carparts.com - ~$23 with s/h)

Painted faded reflectors gloss white, helped some.

Ordered a pair of TYC with glass lenses ( ~$150 for the pair. I couldn't bring myself to drop the big $ on the beautiful C-70 jewel upgrades).

Made a side-of-the-road repair (with self-stick silicone tape) to the infamous J-tube EVAP hose (which hopefully clears teh P0455 Gross leak EVAP code, the only code currently keeping me from registering it!)

Looks good. Interesting painting the inner lamp surfaces white. There's an excellent write up for replacing the head gasket in the diy's. My one question is are you replacing both your headlamps or just the glass and gaskets for $150? They have the lenses ala carte for around $45. Best of luck with the restoration it's a lot of work but its enjoyable. Take advantage of the treasures at your local salvage yard as well.
Always first off the line, while all the cool people are still staring at their phones.

After pic of lights (not quite the same exposure - this is the next day, since I finished at night - I thought it would be a closer comparison during the day)
After painting reflectors white
After painting reflectors white
As you can see in the first post, the white is not pure, it really seems more an off/antique white, but could be a nice gloss finish to try a chrome color over.

The reflection on the wall (should have taken a pic before - there was no projection, even from 2-3 ft away.

I know this shot is during daylight, but I still don't think it's enough light to drive by. Could just be the ancient Hella H7 bulbs, but the TYC set I ordered comes with bulbs, we'll see how that is. And yes, they come with glass, bulbs, the whole deal - from RockAuto TYC 20541000 Headlamp Assembly, TYC 20540900 Headlamp Assembly.

Thanks ;)

Those RA TYC units are the whole assembly, which is great, since my glass was somewhat pitted, as well as the reflectors and bulbs needing replacement. I called my local (I'm out in the country) salvage yard and was quoted ~$40 for a used coolant resevoir, I decided to take a chance on the cheap carparts.com (JC Whitney) version mentioned in my first post. I will keep checking with them, and with the yards in Charlotte/Gastonia, too, especially as I start looking for a pair of front seats with decent tan leather (!)

You repaired a rubber hose with tape rather than just bought a new one? I've never seen that in my life and I've seen some hack repairs. Road side repair? You don't need EVAP to drive the car, do it right the first time and keep our air clean.

As far as the headlight work, I would address the HG first before doing any cosmetic upgrades.

I can't believe he used red tape. The black tape is 5 cents cheaper. And thats 5 US cents, too.

I would not skimp on that coolant reservoir. When these cars overheat, the savings will be lost, quickly

Remember, when these blocks get hot, you have seconds, not minutes, of time to get it shut down and cool.

Really?! Calm down already. Every project has a different starting point.

I like to feel good about projects I'm working on. Complete POS on the outside? Not going to motivate me to work under the hood. The devil's in the details.

Ps.Looks like that red tape is some sort of heat wrap? Keep an eye on it. A decent amount of moisture will kick up in that area, probably won't last long. Best of luck on the repairs. If I were you, I'd hit the repair guides hard https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/catego ... aintenance

That tape looks like the silicon tape I use for wrapping electrical wiring in my car. It is claimed to work on many materials including water pipes. Having said that, it costs $10 CDN a roll!

Good luck with the project, it is easy to let cost run away with you (ask me how I know!!).

Always like to see a little lateral thinking, but always worth looking into what can be used 2nd hand/used safely and prevents re-doing the job if possible.

Keep us up to date on progress. Always like to encourage the new guy!

Interesting solution to paint the reflectors, very creative.

I wonder how the paint is going to hold up, because the headlights get pretty hot inside. Did you use hi temp paint?
