V70 base transmission issues after seal replacement

Hello, first time posting here although I have used this forum for answers many times.

I started having some transmission issues 8 months ago, sticking in neutral, not wanting to move until rpms are higher and then lurching forward.
I realized my fluid was low and topped it off with the toyota type IV as recommended.
The problem came back and I soon realized that I must have a leak. I topped it off once or twice until the leak became worse.

I dropped the transmission and replaced the shaft seal and did the rear main on the engine while I was there.
I just got it all bolted back together and topped it off with new fluid and the problem is worse. I jacked the front of the car up and the wheels would not turn until engine rpm were at 4000.

I am now at a loss, my only theory is could the torque converter take time to fill with fluid?

Any help would be great.

+1 on the fluid level.

Just throwing ideas out there: when reinstalling the torque converter, it is a little tricky. It has been a few years since I did it and both times I had someone experienced next to me to help me make sure - did it "clunk" into place when reinstalling? It is possible to not get it right, and yet assemble the whole thing (eke).

I don't recall it clunking into place, but I bolted it to the flywheel/ motor and then slid the transmission over it. I'm having nightmares about having to do the job over again.

I will be doing an auto trans soon and my research has found that the torque converter has to be seated... which I think is the reference to the clunk into place noted above

Well, I think I followed all the fluid procedures and still no luck. What else should I look for when I drop the trans again? It's bad enough having to do it twice, I want to make sure I don't have to do it a third time.

Well I would want to be really sure before dropping it again, too, I hear ya. You might want to wait until someone with a lot of trans experience chimes in. You need to hear from Mike (precopster), try sending him a PM with a link to this thread. Also, check these out:

The second one suggests you must have got it installed. But did you measure at all, was it close to 1/2 inch?

These instructions are all for 98 and prior, I assume your 99 is the same but TBH I do not know.

Dropped the trans again today after the consensus was improper torque converter seating.
It went much easier the second time.
Pretty sure the pump is messed up and not sure on the torque converter.
I think that is part of the pump on the end of the t.q.?

What kind of transmission is in your car?
AW55-50SN?

It would be super helpful to know what year this V70 was built. Being a base it's either a AW50/42LE or 2000 model year wearing a AW55-50SN

Does it have the stumpy yellow dipstick or the large yellow one?

Looks like the bearing has pulled out with the torque converter; that's not a good thing. Pull the pump out of the transmission and reseat the bearing in the transmission pump.
