AW30/40 transmission - which fluid to use?

Post by gagarin »

Hello,

I recently bought a '92 960 wagon with 198,000 miles. The car is in excellent+ shape and very well taken care of... I performed an entire service on it, new plugs, timing belt with rollers and tensioner, serpentine belt, water pump, oil w/filter, etc.... The transmission had a rather hard shift from first into second gear so I thought once new fluid is put in it'll be fine. The fluid wasn't all that bad but I definitely wanted it changed. After flushing it with 8 quarts of new fluid it was now much clearer. Took it for a ride and the transmission does shift a lot smoother than it did before but there's still a bit of a hard bump from first into second, and once in second the engine revs a bit up and then falls to the correct rpm and goes well from there.

I used Castrol 03520 Transmax Domestic Multi-Vehicle which states that the fluid meets DEXRON, DEXRON-III, IIE and II and MERCON requirements. I wanted to use this fluid to ride it for a bit and then use something better once it completely flushes with this newer added fluid...

Can anyone please recommend the best possible ATF for this tranny? Also, what about the hard shift?

Thank you!

Why Volvos, of course.

Transmission. Auto AW 30-40

"Fluid Specifications. Use Dexron fluid in your AW-30/40 transmission. In the Lubrizol knowledge Base site at www.lubrizol.com, they note that two European commercial vehicle automatic transmission makers have posted specs for mineral oil versus synthetic automatic transmission fluid lifetimes. Voith allows 60k km drain intervals on mineral oil and Group III (hydrocracked semisynthetics) ATFs and 120k km intervals on full synthetics, both in Dexron III specs. ZF allows 30k km for mineral oil, 60k km for part synthetic, and 120k km for full synthetic, again in Dexron. This is an indication of the value of synthetics in normal use. Mobil 1 ATF is a full synthetic. "
