If you read the 2nd page, there is a picture on the correct 'face' seen outward. Basically if you flip the seal over as in the post above from the Volvo Site, that side faces into the transmission.

Empire axles are utter craps. I had one fail after 13,000 miles, so unless you enjoy doing the work twice. . .
