98 V70 CV Joint Boot - Options

Todat I put some Volvo pads on my front brakes. I had been planning a total overhaul but just don't have time at the moment. The ols pads were down to about 1/32 of wear surface left so I got to them just in time.

Anyhow, while In was in there I noticed that the CV boot on the drivers side is torn. It has been that way for more than a month or so because I was in there looking that recently. Split boots don't seem like a good idea to me but I could be wrong on that. Is a split boot a good option and if so what is a good source of a good quality part?

If I have to replace the boot without using a split one what does that project involve? It seems like it would be a lot of work. Easy appeals to me if there is an easy way that produces good results.

The volvo never disappoints. Fix one thing anf find something else that needs attention while you're working on it.

The split boot may glue well, but their are off poor rubber which may not last past 6 months and will crack the same as your original one.

Best is check at Volvo dealer for a boot, remove the axle and replace it asap. It won't be long until water goes inside the CV join and ruin it. Even easier, there are original used Volvo axle shafts for not much, sellers usually have a photo with the sticker which has a date stamped. There might be an original Volvo part only recently replaced.

GKN only, nothing else.

Inner: use GKN boot made for AUDI as mentioned in that thread. This is exactly what I did 2 years ago for INNER.

OUTER: GKN.

I just need to replace the outer boot on the drivers side. I don't think its been torn very long. I hear no clicks or pops when I turn. Oddly there is very little grease thrown around. Usually a torn boot makes quit a mess.

Do I need a special tool to crimp the band onto the boot?

I'm assuming that removing the wheel from one end of the drive axle is a pretty easy job. I haven't looked for instruction yet, but would be pretty confidant that they can be found here when I get a chance to look for them. My plan is to get the part on order so I can put it on this weekend.

I have the special tool to crimp the band, but you can use tile cutters, just use some electrical tape to blunt the ends so they don't tear into the metal band. When you crimp, they should be tight but not super tight. Some ppl do them so that you can spin the band, I do it just enough so that it can't be spun.

How tough is it to just remove enough to be able replace the outer boot? It seems like it would be a pain. I'm not real motivated to do this myself but if I can be in and out in 2 hours I'll probably do it.

Most of the instructions I've found are for removing the entire drive axle assembly. Does the car need an alignment afterwards since you have to loosen up so many suspension parts?

I'm stopping by the dealership on the way home to buy the parts. Either I'll do the replacement or hand it over to the shop I hire to do it for me. I want to get this replaced ASAP and I don't have a free weekend until July.
