There are 2 issues. The broken wires as shown in abscates link above in the tailgate hinge area, and the lock mechanism itself failing either electrically (solenoid fails) or the mechanical latch breaks.

I found two wires that had the insulation torn apart, and one (a black wire) that was starting to come apart. I taped everything up and tucked it back to the way it was, and now the lock won't work at all.

Looks like I have some wiring work to do...

I fixed the lock! It seems two wires were badly damaged at a point where the harness takes a sharp bent on the hinge. Glad I finally took some more time to track it down so I can put my interior back together!
Now I need to replace a power steering hose before the fluid cooks my alternator...

Glad to hear you found the broken wires. They seem to be more common in my experience than the motors or lock assembly. I still have to get to repairing the 4 broken wires in the trunk wiring for my 850 sedan!
