Glad I've found this DIY. Wonder if removing the pan without lowering the subframe can be done for P2 cars as well ?

I need some help here guys. I have a 96 850 Volvo.
Car would drive fine, then one day have a flashing arrow. Car went into limp mode. Rowed the shifter and went away. Car ran fine for about a month. Soon then the arrow came back on. Then the car would go into limp mode and would go into neutral. The car would not catch any gear nor reverse. So I parked the car. Order pnp switch, replaced it and still no luck.

Now the car is parked in my garage. You car start the car and reverse and drive work fine for about 3 minutes. Once the car warms up, is goes into to neutral again. But you can turn the car off for abiut a min or two and turn back on and wi work fine for another minute or two, the go into the neutral. When it does catch the gear, slips a bit and then engages. So having this yku would think its solenoid getting stuck or something ....so i went and gor a top of the line scanner to scan all the modules and no codes.
Change the fluids and had a bunch of gunk on the drain plug. Oil was a dark brown. So now debating on maybe solenoid? Or something else. ....have no idea. I've been reading this thread for about a week or two. Need some help here....thanks

To me, it sounds like friction material clogging an internal screen. Have that issue on a 04 C70 myself with only 96K miles. Some trans have an internal screen that can not be accessed except for complete rebuild. Consider a junk yard trans replacement. That vehicle transmission is generally very available and usually fairly bullet proof. Would suggest a drain and fill first but sounds like you did that already and it likely won't solve your prob. Nor will solenoids if it's the screen.

Not likely to fix prob if the internal screen is clogging. You shoud try it but I'd bet you a cup of coffee that the friction material does not drain out and will clog screen again fairly quick. Been there - done that. Welcome to my world.

What kind of scanner did you use? Only certain code readers will be able to read transmission codes on the 96+ cars. I would recommend getting it read at a dealer. When my solenoids went bad I had codes for them.

I personally don't think internal wear to be the culprit on a transmission that would work fine for weeks, than suddenly not shifting any gears.
I'd rather think of an electronic part, or shifter link issue.
In all cases, don't discard this transmission if you are going to replace it
