99 V70R front brake piston seized "out"

Post by volare »

I'm gonna go ahead and say I'm pretty sure the caliper is trashed but can't hurt to ask.

The Falcon is my kid's DD and she neglected to inform me that the brakes had begun sounding like a garbage disposal choking on a fork; I discovered this when I had to drive it this week. New rotors and pads acquired and I set to work on the driver side, which was not without its own bugaboos and involved a breaker bar, a torch, and a lot of swearing.

So everything is apart, cleaned, etc. ready to go back together and I go to push the piston back with a c-clamp (using the remnant of the old pad)... nada. Thing will. not. budge. Can't say I'm surprised tbh.
Bleeder valve open just a hair to let fluid out to allow compression. Drippage but no movement of the piston.
Hit it with P'Blaster.

...I'm guessing I have to go find a pair of reman in the morning. I don't think these have enough life left in them to bother rebuilding, they've seen too many Massachusetts winters.

O'Reilly Auto Parts might be your best bet. They warranty them for life and are competitively priced with other auto supply stores.

Irony there is, the kid we bought the thing from works at local O'Reilly. Autozone has one set in stock and one that's special order; ten dollar diff or so. Guess I'll have to see when I get up in the AM.

Looking at the condition of the end of the piston, it looks very toasty. The importance of having good brakes is obvious and exchange units are not too bad. FCP had some on clearance last week. I'd try removing the bleed nipple altogether and then try with a cloth over the hole to catch fluid see if it will collapse.

Just be glad it is not the rears on a 2000 ' R'. Rebuilds are all you may find and even those are like rocking horse poop to find.

Exactly... Given it's The Teenager's car, makes me a LOT more antsy about making sure the brakes are good.
If it was my DD I'd be fine with dinking around with it some more, trying to get it to collapse etc. because if it crapped out again I'd know what was happening and it wouldn't be the first, second or third time I've had brakes malfunction.
Kid, not so much.

I have to get it back on the road asap. I'd be happy to order from FCP but I'm caught in the position of "need them NOW".
I haven't closely inspected the rears yet but I'm thinking to order those from them soon, before the dookie hits the fan again.

I hear you on the need it now part, but wise precaution on the rears in the future. Also replace the flexi hoses while you are at it either now or when you do the rears. Again FCP has ATE for the front for abut $10, not sure about the rears.

I've used re-manufactured unit and only had one issue with a bad seal but was replaced under warranty.

Well thats easier to find than unicorn poop at least.

I have Cardone rebuilds on both front and rear of the 1999 now - from FCP with no issues. The back worked so well, I disconnected the e-brake.

Thanks Jason, I'm definitely going to order the rear brakes (rotors/calipers/pads) from you once I'm done wrestling with the fronts!

I wrote the Brake System overhaul a while back.

DIY: 1998 Volvo S70 GLT Parking Brake Tips/Tricks

NOTE:

- The issues of rubber hoses Front vs Rear. Use only ATE or FTE brand.
As a rule of thumbs, I replace my rubber hoses every 100K or so.

- Caliper: rebuild it yourself vs "new" caliper. If you are desperate, NAPA has rebuilt caliper, just make sure it has an ATE or Volvo logo on it.
Boston area (your area) has some NAPA stores.
