Before you embark on your parking brake job. Make sure you check out your parking brake cable. Check out this part of the parking brake system.

It sometimes brakes here and will necessitate a parking brake cable job. Cheap in terms of parts (approx $35 for two cables), but a whole lotta grunting and swearing! I still haven't gotten to it but the cables are sitting on top of my toolboxes, beckoning me!

Here's the tutorial:

Also, I don't think this qualifies as a stage 0 kind of thing, but you gotta swap out those old crusty shifter bushings. It makes the gearbox feel so much smoother!! https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=76272 Also, don't be afraid to dump out the old gearbox oil out and refresh it...
Just checked the parking brake cable I guess it looks like a gentle bend, not a sharp angle, but here a picture because what do I know.

Will consider replacing the shifter bushings. Looks like something I actually trust myself to do. What kind of a noticeable difference does it make?

With car running, turn on ALL electronic device, headlight, a/c, defrost, wiper if you want, radio, etc. measure the voltage on the battery again. Then, measure the voltage between the positive end of the alternator, and the positive end of the battery.

Report back.
Measured the voltage of the battery with the engine off at 12.5 V. With the engine on ~13.8 V, and read ~13.8 V with all lights, stereo, and A/C on. Could not find the positive terminal on the alternator (kind of buried in there), so need a little more direction on where to find that.
zhenya wrote:You might want to pull the rear brakes apart before you order anything for the parking brake stuff to see for yourself what's going on. That way you can order everything you need at once, plus you'll know how it all works when you go to fix it for real. The parking brake has two adjustment points - one is inside the rear disc and adjusts the pad position against the drum, the other is at the lever end inside the cabin, and adjusts the slack in the cable. Neither of these will help if the cable is seized internally, which will be obvious if you take it apart. There is a cam inside the rear brake that the cable pulls against to engage the brake pads. This should move freely when you pull the lever. If not, you probably need a new cable. FCP sells a kit that includes everything you need for a rear brake job. Service or replace the slider pins that hold the pads in place if they are the least bit corroded.
My only problem with doing this is I need to drive the car everyday to get to work (oddly except for today, surprise day off). By the time I'm back home, I'm tired and running low on daylight. Which puts me not really in the mood to take everything apart, see what's wrong, put it all back together, to then take it all apart again later to fix it.

Its buried under the intake manifold and has a black plastic cover, too. Be careful with the probe and don't short it to anything metal.

Since I need the car today and tomorrow and can't take things apart to see what I need, I'm just going to order new brake shoes, springs, and all associated hardware minus the brake cable. Can't hurt having all new parts in the place that's suppose to stop my car from rolling down a hill. I don't see anything obvious that looks like the cable is broken. Looking for the parts / kits right now. If anyone has some recommendations, feel free to post.

I just ordered this kit for my 850. Should be the same or similar kit available for your car. Even if you can't order from FCP it should give you a nice visual of everything needed. Broken cables are not commonly the problem - but rather that they seize due to corrosion in salt areas.

Wow, that OEM kit with the painted drum looks sweet. And you know it's Volvo so it'll never rust. Though, after one winter in NYC, the Bosch kit I purchased haven't started to rust yet... (Unlike the "top-of-the-line" Centrics I put on my dad's Accord.)

Your cables look OK. Mine are snapped right by the washer thing. You might be good to go. If you want to go on the cheap. Some guys have put hose over it with zip ties to keep the corrosion out of it.

This is what I'm planning to order from FCP: Bosch brake shoe set, and TRW parking brake hardware kit. Unfortunately I'm not able to conjure money out of thin air and can't currently afford all Genuine Volvo parts. Are these brands a bad idea, or is there something else I could be forgetting?

I have the Bosch Quietcast all around. Stopping power is great. Build quality is great too. I think they're made in Spain. They do give off quite a bit of dust though. So you do have to clean your wheels every month, at the very least. I don't know if we really needed such "good" brakes. (I drive a 5-Spd, but I drive slower than my dad...) I never searched around for alternatives, but I've seen Brembo kits on ebay for good prices. Shop around. I just looked on Rockauto.com, they don't have rotor options like they do for Hondas and Nissans. I see FCP has Meyle kits. If I could go back, and they had these when I was looking for brakes, I would've ordered those without hesitation. I also wouldn't hesitate to use the top of the line brake pads at Autozone. They're great.

I'm considering going with Bosch Quietcast for my car, since my rear brakes in particular are horrible. Good to know they're good!
If you go with Autozone, you have to go with the top of the line brakes. Any less will squeal and produce dust like crazy.

Mobil One High Mileage 10w-40 @ Walmart for under 25 bucks, 5 quarts. I hate Wally World but I buy oil there. I think the Valvolene 10w-40 high miles blend is about 18 bucks, 5 quarts, and I think it is a 50-50- blend but maybe not.

Walmart is great for oil. Always much cheaper than anywhere else.
