Hi Guys,

Thought i would update you all on the final situation. Found records that show the timing belt etc was changed over at 80,000km so i'm still good on that for a while. Ordered in an idler pulley as that was cheap and quick.

Went out to do the replacement this morning. Had a quick listen with the hose again to make sure it was the idler pulley. Definitely noise coming from it.

Got everything out of the way, went to loosen the tensioner and realised it didn't look right. Really should have grabbed a pic of it. It had come off the ridge on the block it is meant to sit on to allow it to tension as it warms up.

Out of curiosity (and laziness as it is bloody cold here at the moment) i reset it all back where it should be, tightened it up and started the car. Noise is totally gone. Let it warm up, nothing. Took it for a drive, nothing. In fact i think its quieter than when we got it a year ago. It also idles much smoother than it used to.

Hopefully that's the end of it, if not i hope it at least lasts until warmer weather.

I am curious though, how the hell can the tensioner fall off the lock post bit?
