I opened up both Master switches, with the idea of cleaning them like Medic225 did. Both are from 1999 V70 wagons

Clearly, the new switch on the right that the Volvo Repair Shop installed, IS new.

to remove the 4 torx screws holding the FUSE box cover and get to the
"hidden" locations for the CB's that protect the Windows/Sunroof and power seats.

At this point, you'll be able to reach the plug-in circuit breaker in "Location 37".
Do you know how many amps the circuit breaker in slot #37 should be?
thank you

I opened fuse box. there WAS a 20 amp circuit breaker in slot #37. I removed it and this is what I found under it.

I put a new Circuit Breaker in and three of the windows worked fine. Drivers side went down 2 inches and stopped.
Clearly there is something going on in the fuse box; replacing the circuit breaker every week doesn't make sense...
I am not sure how to proceed. Any thoughts you have would be very much appreciated. thank you Becky

Wires running along the body thru entry point to cabin and then floor going under the carpet must be pinched and shorting out.

Thats massive charring in that fuse box. Im afraid that might even be the origin there - high resistance means loss, heat, high current, and the circuit breaker pops. Maybe you can find one in a junkyard?

I think there is damage under that melted plastic that has to be put right.

You're jumping to a bit of a conclusion there.
The OP states that three windows worked and
the system failed when the drivers window was used.
All of the drivers window wiring runs from the master
switch to the window motor. It's all in the door.

And the way Volvo runs harnesses makes it truly
unlikely that anything is pinched and shorting out.

I gotta go with Abscate on this one. That fuse box is TOAST.
In the words of the Mythbusters, "THERE'S your problem!"

I'd start looking for a new one if you wish to really make it right.
At the bare minimum, the contact clips for that burned up breaker
position need to be replaced before you go any further with this.

That is not pretty...

Power locks run off of a different feed.
The switch just happens to be in the same
switch module. Electrically, they're not connected.

The passenger side locks are a wholly different issue.
Search for lock failures in the MVS database for more info.

First, I have to say, you guys are Amazing. I've never done more than jump a battery or change a flat! A week ago I didn't have a clue how to remove a door panel! I have now successfully replaced an entire door! I am going to remove the fuse box from my "parts car" (an almost identical '99 Volvo wagon I picked up for $300 bucks because I thought I needed a new wiring Harness) and, after reading a lot more, try to switch it out! I will take pictures of what I find under the charred fuse box! Anything I should be aware of in my foray into fuses? Thank you.
