Can't fill fuel tank

On my first drive of any real distance, the 2000 V70XC I just purchased threw a check engine light after about 30 minutes down the road. Checking the fuel cap is always my first “go to”. It wasn’t loose, but it was an after-market fuel cap. A quick trip to AutoZone to get the error code showed a slow leak in the vapor containment system. This furthered my thinking that it was possibly this replacement fuel cap.

Today I was at the end of the quarter tank of fuel the car had in it when I bought it, so I stopped for a fill up. Car was near empty, indicator on red, fuel light on, 20 miles remaining on the trip computer.

While fueling, the gas station pump would shut off after a second or two of running and the car will splash fuel from the fill port like it was full. After a couple times of trying with the same result, I started the car again, shut it off. After this action, the car fueled up as expected.

I believe the culprit is a bad charcoal cannister.

Mine does the same thing maybe once every few months. I generally try to never let the tank go less than half empty, and like you mentioned, the problem typically resolves itself after a few minutes or a little driving.

This happens to me periodically, and there are a few specific pumps that seem most likely to do it. I just hold the pump at a very low flow rate by hand, and that prevents it from shutting off.
