Hi guys,
96 850 Turbo Platinum wagon. I'm starting to get a little frustrated; this is the second inner tie rod I've had go bad within 6 months and I'm wondering what might be the cause? The first set was Meyle HD and the current set is TRW. I've replaced pretty much the entire front suspension over the last year and a half, and just put on new struts about 3 months ago. Perhaps it's just the awful Western Pennsylvania roads? Or maybe a problem with the steering rack? Just throwing that out there because it's been leaking slowly for a while (leak has been much slower since I switched to Valvoline ATF for leaks). I made sure I installed them correctly last time with blue thread locker. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks,
Bob

I guess I thought the TRWs were Volvo parts...the nice thing is I got them at FCP so I'll get a refund. I'm also getting quite good at changing it out; plus I get to use my special inner tie rod tool again lol...

Whoops, I just saw that there is a Volvo inner tie rod. At 3 times the price, of course...Jazzer wrote:I guess I thought the TRWs were Volvo parts...the nice thing is I got them at FCP so I'll get a refund. TRW part should be the same as Volvo part, this is a curious one I don't have a good answer.

Just a couple of questions:
- Do you make a lot of full-speed, full steering-locked turns over potholes? Do you have a penchant for crazy u-turns?
- How are your axles, hubs, sway end links, sway bar bushings, control arms, and struts?
- Related to the question above, do you get weird vibrations from your suspension?
-And finally, are you really sure your inner tie rods are bad?
I feel like they always get kinda loose over a winter, but will usually still hold an alignment. (Which, to me, is how an inner tie rod should rely be measured...) I had two Meyle outer tie rods fail on me in less than a year of driving in NYC, and the Meyle inners were a little "loosey gooesy" when I took them off. But with new outers installed, my alignment has held for four months already.

All tie rods on my car(inner & outer) are still original and in great shape.
Control arms, bushings and sway bar links were replaced 2 or 3 times for 17 years of ownership.

No to crazy driving, but I have hit hit a few bad potholes, for sure. The axles and hubs (and what's left of the sway bar bushings) are original (196k) but the rest has been replaced in the last year and a half. The guys at the alignment place told me that the inner tie rods have "excessive play", which is their way of saying we THINK your tie rods are bad, and we'd like to sell you some. I would hate to put another set of inners only to have them fail because of something else that needs replaced.theWIFES_S70 wrote:Just a couple of questions:

That's why they failed. One bad pothole can damage the whole strut assembly when you hit it hard, not to mention one tie rod.Jazzer wrote:...I have hit hit a few bad potholes, for sure...
