DO NOT use Dex/Merc tranny fluid. Proper fluid type is JWS 3309 which can be purchased from (of course) the Volvo dealership or the Toyota dealership as ATF Type4. Reason why you can use the Toyota stuff: Volvo uses an Aisan AW55 transmission, similar to that found in certain Toyota models. Aisan is the tranny manufacturer and they are the ones who specify the fluid type. Note, you can get it from IPDusa as well, click the link above to support this site: https://www.ipdusa.com/products/10543/1 ... nsmissions

Coolant is a dealer only item IMHO. The Volvo coolant is excellent and will give many many years of trouble and corrosion free service. You could use modern OAT type coolant from another manufacturer but won't save any $$ and might have some incompatibility so why bother. DO NOT use all-purpose coolant you'll find at O'Reilly's or other such auto stores.

Did you replace the o-rings on the tranny lines going to the radiator? Cheap insurance....

And while I'm at it, Power steering fluid is not Dex/Merc type ATF. It's a special type; Pentosin CHF-11 or CHF-202. Surprisingly O'Reilly stocks Pentosin CHF-11 fluid.

Mobil 3309 or Toyota Type 1V (same fluid) THAT'S IT!

Anything JWS3309-compliant will move your car, but you'll have at least slight jolts. This gearbox likes only original Volvo ATF.

He just needs to add a bit so why are you people giving him other options?
NEVER MIX FLUIDS, use 3309 or Type4 which is what is in there

I mixed original, Amsoil, Mobil 3309, Idemitsu Type-TLS, Valvoline MaxLife. Now back on original ATF (1161640), transmission works very fine.

I've had good luck buying from here over the years. Watch out for sales- sometimes they have a case for about $10 less: http://thelubricantstore.com/mobil-atf- ... gQodU5EEhQ
