2004 XC70 removed drive shaft, now making bad noise

Hi! On the road and developed a vibration. I have the model with a Geartronic (auto with manual mode) transmission. Four different shops said it must be the drive shaft, so I just yanked it out, not being able to afford a new one. Online sites indicated this shouldn't be a problem. I also pulled the fuse on the Haldex unit. On the test drive it started making a loud mid-to-high pitched noise that just got louder as I sped up. Went over all my work to see if I left a scalpel in the patient but can't find anything. Any help or advice or further questions will be greatly appreciated! d

When did you replace angle gear oil last time?

VTL: Never, but I've just pulled the angle gear, hoping to leave it out altogether.
