So like a bunch of other stuff on this new (PITA #2) 2000 V70 NA with the 5 speed auto box, the axle is different to any others I have worked on. Normally with the axles with a nut on the end at the axle, you have to widen out a clip hidden in the outer CV joint to release the joint to remove it. The outer boot got damaged when the axle was in transit from Erie Vo-Vo and they have no replacement currently so I have to fix this one.
Having cleaned a lot of grease out of the joint, I can not find the groove that holds the clip on this axle. I see in the kit I have from GKN/Lobro that unlike the 'nut' version it only has what looks like a wire 'C' shaped clip supplied. So how in the name of goodness do you get the CV knuckle off? Do you just find the largest hammer you can and whack at it to get it off/over a hidden locking (?) ring/groove?
Sorry, found my wife took the digital camera today on her vacation so I have to spend some time with my cell phone figuring out how to take and transfer pictures to the computer for up-load.
Help is appreciated.
Neil.

Can you go from the INNER side?
Just be careful with the INNER boot, Oetiker clamps.
If you are careful enough, you can re-use the Oetiker clamps.

Weird, I posted an update to this earlier. I relooked at Vida as it does not give the CV change instructions for the later style of axle. It only gives the info for the 36mm nut version of axle, not the style I have.
I know the early P2's use the same trans, so looked at the repair info for a 2001 V70 base. Turns out there is a 'C' shaped wire spring that sits in a groove that acts as a retainer. Would appear you just whack the CV joint with a brass drift until it comes off, the replace the 'C' clip and refit.
Now I was sure I had a set of brass drifts but can't find them anywhere, and my brass hammers are too big to hit the area I need to, so I'll have to go an get a drift tomorrow and then re-convene the beating on the axle. Bet I'll find the drifts hidden somewhere obscure later!
Thanks for the suggestion cn90! I am working on the RH axle and the inner joint is not removable, and there is a carrier bearing in the way too which I still have to figure out how to replace!

I managed to get the cv joint off with a brass drift and hammer. I cleaned the majority of the grease out, but as the boot has not been split in use, I decided not to fully disassemble the joint. I removed the majority of the grease.
Now my Haynes manual comes with the info for a Turbo and non-turbo axle for grease quantities for the 36mm nut type axles (I think that is was 120gms and 80gms respectively) but the kit I have from Lobro has 2 x 80 or 90gm packages for the outer boot. If this was the older style of boot I am ok with the quantities, as they have much smaller boots and CV outer joint than the one on my car. Anyone have any source of how much weight of grease needs to be input on the joint? Boot is for a 2000 V70 NA 5 speed auto. I tried looking up Vida but all it says is add half the packet to the outer joint and the rest into the boot!?
Thanks,
Neil.

- Do not use the C-clip that comes with the GKN kit. Re-use the C-clip in the axle.
- RH axle: carrier bearing has nothing to do with boot job.

Ah, you meant to remove the inner boot and dismantle the inner CV joint and then re-build the outer.
Too late on the clip. I used the new one. Had to be careful installing it as it was a little reluctant to stay in the groove. What is wrong with the GKN C clip? I used the clip only as Vida says to replace it.
Neil.
