P2 HVAC Blower debris found - door seal

The HVAC blower was occasionally making a heck of a noise. I pulled the fan out and found a piece of cloth up in the plenum above the squirrel cage. It's about a foot long and looks kind of like some headliner material. Evidence showed it had been in contact with the fan. We've had the car since it was about three years old so I'm pretty sure the system has never been torn into besides (too infrequent) filter changes.

Does anyone recognize it as something that was supposed to be in there?

The same thing was pulled from my fan last year by my dealership and the mechanic explained that the fabric is from the fresh air / recirculation door. In my car it completely was in the fan causing a terrible vibration and reduced air flow. My car is a 2004. June

Wow, thanks, June! I was conjuring up all sorts of explanations in my mind.

Yes, it was making a heck of a racket. Besides finding that I also found the heater core to have the beginning of a leak, so I had the pleasure of replacing that also over the weekend. What fun!

I was told it went around the edge of the door to better seal when closed. My mechanic is one of my dealer's master technicians so I do have confidence when he said not to worry. To replace the door requires a major disassembly and he said best done if the evaporator ever needs replacement. I have noticed slight outside smells getting in on recirculation that previously did not happen. Otherwise I have had no trouble. June

I didn't see this on mine, a 2003, so I guess they added it to the later models. You can have quite a good access to the flap by tossing the large plastic piece outside at the bottom of the windshield.

I'm with Abscate.... WTF is that??

I've looked at the parts breakdown and the only thing I can see that comes close is the "sealing"... 31250772... which looks like the gasket between the housing and the car. I can't imaging that getting to the fan without some damage or serious water leaks.

I have to pull my fan here soon as it squeaks at very low speed, so I'm curious what this is and of its something to address while I have it apart for something else.

Looking at that pic you can see that it spent a lot of time attached to something, while the fan pulled at it (the twisted side). Eventually the fan pulled it in.

So it either came from the recirc side or outside intake. Only two explainable options. I've seen the recirc door recently (damper motor issues) and I didn't see anything resembling cloth on it.

That's a interesting thing too. What is it made out of? It looks cottonish which in a often damp environment is a haven for all kinds of interesting growths.

Maybe while I have the motor out to lube it I'll break out the endoscope and see if there's anything hanging around in there!
