My new pain - 2000 project V70 and random dash lights

Post by scot850 »

Well now the project is running as per my last project update. I am still getting random warning lights on start up, but they appear to mostly be fairly repeatable.

On initial starting of the engine, the bulb failure light comes on, along with the ABS warning light. After putting in gear the TRACS light comes on and the engine check light. Also in the mix, the outside temp readout has 'disC'. Then the mileage and trip meter go to '----'.

If I turn the selector for the temp/fuel readout to any other setting it comes back on and then, putting it back to temp it then usually registers ok after that, and the mileage and trip will return at the same time.

After a short time the bulb failure light goes out. Normally, this only come on if a light does not come on at point of application, but checking the lights that should be on, they are all on as far I can can see.

Next the ABS light will go out and the TRACS light comes on.

Sometimes re-starting the car, no lights come on at all. I'm wondering if the temperature has got something to do with this as it is definitely worse since the temp. got over 20C and is now getting near 30C.

Not sure if it is related, but the turn signal does not usually switch off after turning left, even when over correcting (though it may be a steering wheel alignment issue).

Tomorrow I will did the laptop out and see what Vida hopefully finds as as my basic tester says no DTC's are set, even though the engine check light is on!

Any other help would be greatly accepted as electic'ary is not my strength. I also plan to re-clean the engine bay earth straps (already done but worth re-checking).

Thanks,

Neil.

Today I had some time, so I connected my laptop and Dice system to the 2000 V70 base. I have not used this system much, and therefore forget how it is used between uses. However, it connects and reads the car, but as before, it does not give any transmission type info. Prior to buying the car, it did the same and the dealer had to remove the ECU + TCU and clean the connections to get the system to talk. I now wondering if I am having the same or similar issue. Car appears to run fine, but wary of doing so, as the Engine check light and TRACS light are on all the time.

Please remind me how to get the system to read what fault codes are set. I was sure the last time I had used the system, it did that automatically and gave a list. Here I don't get any codes at all, but do get the fault lights.

Can anyone please enlighten me on the process to find fault codes once Vida has read the car details?

Thanks.

Neil.

On one of the wagons I was getting an intermittent bulb out then the indicator would go away...what I finialy found that one bulb had a broken filament. Sometimes the broken filament would make contact where it broke and light up. Drove me nuts.
Wonder if your ABS module is failing

Got your PM re: ABS module. Thanks for the info.

I had to replace one of the front turn signal bulbs as it was bad. I think I may just pull all the bulbs that should be on at that point and check them and the relevant grounds.

Anyone tell me how many grounds there are in the engine bay? On the base engine it does not appear to have the one from the torque mount to the firewall like my turbos have. I am also going to have a closer look at the B+ cable at the main fuse box as it looks oxidised, as does the battery ground just in front of the battery tray. That battery ground cable is not the OE and looks again fairly oxidised at the body end.

Just thought I had better clarify. The car does not have TRACS but STC, the symbols look the same. Only found out when checking tha part number on the ABS module unit. Part # 9496946 (if I read it backwards correctly). This is not a part number that shows up on Vida for the year and STC unit. Is this correct?

Thanks,

Neil.

Many different PNs for the same ABS units, only someone like Matt can "decode" the part numbers

Thanks guys, looks like that will be where I am going next. Had his repaired units before and all has been good, and a great guy into the bargain too. We are lucky to have him as a resource. I have read the info on his web-page. I had the offer of a good re-built unit but unfortunately it was a TRACS version, but offer was appreciated. Scuttled down to PnP where a 99 S70 base had come in this week in the faint hope it may have the same ABS module, but naturally, with all my good luck on this car so far (i.e. NONE!!), it was a really base model with no TRACS or STC. Only bonus was it had brand new top and bottom Volvo torque mounts and a Febi crank mount, 2 almost new Volvo lower control mounts as well. So trip was not wasted after all! Mind you don't currently need any of that stuff just now, but shame to waste it!

Seems there are a load of TRACS ABS controllers out there. Part # 9472100 is a TRACS # according to Matty's Mid-West web-site.

Thanks for the offer though!

I have e-mailed Matty to see if he has one available, or if I need to send mine for re-build.
