SRS Light On s70 t5

Post by speedyt5 »

Tried searching, but wasn't able to find anything. The SRS light is on now, it says it is the passenger side airbag in the seat. This is weird because 3 years ago I put new seats in and before I put the new seat in the old seat also had this exact same thing. Anyways, is the old story true that the airbags will not deploy in a crash or is that just an old wives tale? I know there is only one way to find out, but I don't want to test it.

You have to read the. Actual fault code to determine this.

On a 99, the seat bags are fired by the SRS controller, not impact, so whether you have working air bags depends on the fault.

It says its the right side airbag, but by the SRS light being on at all does that mean that none of the airbags would fire in an accident? I have heard that it just shuts the all down.

First obvious thing is to check the wiring to the harness has not broken. Constant movement of seats can cause some wire to fracture with age.

My understanding is if the SRS light is on, then the system is disabled completely. Check in you hand-book or call the dealer if you don't get a better answer.

I have not seen a reputable source discuss the SRS software.

One likely culprit is the connector with the orange wire has corrosion. This is close to the seat base.

Simply remove this connector and clean it and then get the the SRS code cleared. On this model year you need a code clearer that can talk to the SRS module. Apart from a dealer you can try the Autel MD 519 or a Vida/Dice setup (laptop required).

The SRS system is pretty robust. After clearing the SRS code in my 2000 V70 due to corrosion in the aforementioned connector I drove it for another 5 years with no SRS mishaps. In fact in all our Volvos (about 10 of them by now) we had no SRS issues apart from not disconnecting the battery before working on SRS related components as this will give you an SRS warning.

Borrowing this thread. On my S70 -99 the SRS light tends to light on for a few seconds when I start the car and then it turns off again. Is this some indicator that something is wrong? I have checked error codes but haven't found anything.

I had an SRS light on after son left window open overnight in rainstorm. Moisture had gotten to the seat airbag wiring. Based on a suggestion (I think it was from Neil or Steve, but I may be mistaken) I dried the wiring out and my local independent reset the SRS light for me. No problems since.
