I have a 1999 XC70 AWD wagon. It has 178000 miles on it. I did a a complete valve job in February of this year. I also replaced the entire PVC system and installed a IDP turbo control valve.
Here are the symptoms I have observed. After going down a long descent I get a puff of white smoke when I start to accelerate again. It's very short burst. I get no smoke during normal driving. Also the car does does not smoke while it's coasting down hill ( have followed it in another car). Second symptom, I have oil(sheen/coating) in the pipes from intake side of the turbo to the throttle body. This sounds to me like the turbo oil seal is leaking under high vacuum. I don't think the rings are bad since it does not consume much oil (less than 1/2 quart every 1500 miles). So does a leaking turbo oil seal sound rational? This is my first turbo charged car.

A sheen with no oil coming from the intercooler weep hole sounds normal to me, not enough to justify tearing into turbo seals.

Hello Abscate, I did not know there was a intercooler weep hole. Perhaps it's plugged and I am getting excessive oil pooling in the inter cooler. I will look for it.

Has to be a picture here on the inter webs somewhere. If you take off the bottom cover, its on the lowest part of the intercooler, where the metal forms a shallow funnel. Obvious place for function.

My induction pipes were oily film, people have reported drops of oil in normally functioning cars, too.

Keep the oil full and ignore it.
