Anyone know if there is a tutorial or just any advice on replacing the blower in a 2011 xc60? Do u need a special tool? Where is the best place to get replacement parts? Thanks for any advice as I would like to do this on my own, mechanic shop wants 10 hrs labour at 120 bones per hour. THANKS!

I wanted to note that I successfully greased the bearings on my 2004 S60R with great success. Once you have the fan out, pop off the bottom cover and you will see this. Unplug the motor plug and remove the 2 Torx T25 bolts circled in red:

Image

I was able to get the fan motor out of the base by prying with a plastic pry tool under the top of the cover against the motor where the side relief is for the plug. The top bearing is a little tricky, what I did was snake the plastic hose for my white lithium grease in through the fan and verified it was touching the bearing with a small mirror, as shown below:

Image

I then stuffed a white towel around the bearing so grease wouldnt get in the fan itself, turned the assembly fan-side up and sprayed the lithium grease in. Turn the fan several times and repeat to make sure the bearing gets nice and greased. The bottom bearing is easy; I sprayed White Lithium grease into the bearing circled in red and turned the fan several times to work it in.

I can confirm this fix worked, no more squeaky fan!

Thanks for the pics on this. My P2 fan chirps slightly, only when I brake. The minute I ease off the brake, it stops. Im driving my kid crazy trying to diagnose the noise - but I owe her a new laptop when she gets it right and fixes it.

She has figured out it has something to do with car speed, but has not figured out it is the fan blower yet. Once she does that, Im going to be down $1000.

Most often the fan blades part is really stuck on the motor shaft. Don't pull of it or the ceramic elements inside the engine will break rendering it useless. Don't bend the blades either, they will become unbalanced and cause vibrations+noise.

The bearings, especially the top one which is accessible if the blades part are removed, must be cleaned from corrosion inside with some steel wire sponge. The top one is the one causing the motor to get stuck/squeaky.

The easiest route is to get a used fan from Ebay, look for the pin in the center of the blades part with less rust on it.

Now comes the tricky part where you can feel the frustration of a toddler yet use some very adult words. Using your T25 bit and various 1/4 inch drive attachments, locate and remove the five mounting screws. I tried my best to get a picture of them in place, highlighted with the arrows.
First, your writeup with photos is amazing and very well put together. Kudos. I have a 2001 V70 2.4T, and I was able to take apart my blower motor + cabin air filter assembly, clean it, and put it back together to solve an issue where the car would heavily vibrate when the fan was set to max, and the fan would make a chittering sound when set to low.

Second... I realize you wrote this up nearly six years ago... but by any chance do you remember what setup you used to get off the back right screw? I marked it in this edit of your photo:

The other four screws weren't too problematic for me, but that one was wedged right up next to the footwell, even with the carpet fully pulled back and the drain pipes moved out of the way, I could only barely manage to get the torx head onto it. Even then I was only able to slowly get it off by making hair-width turns over and over. Eventually I just grabbed the screw with my fingers to get it out the rest of the way. I suppose the issue may have been that my drivers are all 1/2" or 3/8", and so I was only able to use the 1/4" torx heads with a 3/8" -> 1/4" adapter, which added extra height to the head. Even with things like a slim head angled ratchet and a universal swivel adapter it was still a PITA. I guess a slim 1/4" ratchet with a short torx head might have worked, but I don't have those things. Ugh. To be honest, when I was putting it back on, I did the other four screws nice and tight, and just left that one hand-screwed in as much as I could. It doesn't seem to be causing any ill effects, but we shall see.
Cars I've owned:
- 2015 to current: 2001 Volvo V70 2.4T; 2004 Honda Odyssey
- 2007 to 2015: 2002 Subaru Legacy L Wagon
- 2003 to 2016: 2001 Toyota Corolla LE
- 1999 to 2003: 1994 Toyota Camry LE

The tool you need there is a flexible 1/4 drive extension, flexible like rubber, not a Ujoint

If the motor still works and only makes noise - you can buy a cheap knock off (which I did and it worked fine) or take the fan apart until you get to the motor and clean and relube the bearings (which I also did from the first car and used it in a second car).

I know you are done with your project - but for others - if you have time and any ability and money is an issue - for a little work you can stop the noise by cleaning and relubing the bearings.

many thanks for your post DanOrbis - I took my blower motor out, found the motor was ok so I bought a new regulator - same fault. I was going to "hot wire" the motor but then I noticed the fluff blocking the little vent on the Climate Control panel. Hoovered the dust out and was amazed to find the blower works!!
the detailed removal instructions on this forum were very helpful too.

The pictures are displayed as a no entry sign, guess the have been deleted.
My blower motor needs to be replaced too and that images would be a great help

Thanks a lot
