volvo 240 oil pressure sender unit

Post by vcowens »

hello everyone, i was finishing up installing a 5 bar pressure gauge in my 1991 240. I thought i was homefree until i broke off the small screw that connects with the green wire going to the actual gauge. Any ideas if and how i can fix this? as you know these sending units can be pricey and hard to find in the salvage yards. it looks like there is a small wire going thru the unit to the screw. is there any way i can get into the unit and repair it?

I think you're going to need these numbers.

Echlin oil pressure switch at NAPA # ECH OP6138 ( has 1/8" NPT, would need adapter)

5 Bar oil pressure switch to fit 1985 Audi 4000S has M10-1.0 threads (would require M14-1.5 x M10-1.0 adapter).

Hi, I've suffered the same fate. I was working on an alternator and ground wire replacement and snapped off a terminal of my oil pressure sending unit. Local auto parts supplier ran above numbers to no avail. Is there an egauges.com equivalent? Or another substitute? Thanks.

Maybe something from a VW/Audi car? This may require an adapter fitting.

VDO most likely was the original manufacturer. Of the two VDO products listed above 360-081-030-033C is a valid number in their catalog. Can anyone verify fit? It's a 5-bar with M14 x 1.5 threads. Thanks.

OK. Talked to VDO tech support. No definite answer. The suggested I contact www.kienzle.de, their european distributor.
Before I go that route however, I want to check out a couple things with MVS about this.
I found a VDO sender 360-028. It's 80 PSI/5-bar, has M14X1.5 threads (is that the correct thread?) and has 10-180 Ohms resistance.
Does this thing tick all the boxes? The VDO numbers in the op are NLA. Thanks.

VDO Gauges 360-800 comes with the adapter fittings. From what I've noticed M14x1.5 threads are nearly the same as 1/4" NPT. Just as M10x1.0 is nearly the same as 1/8" NPT. So an adapter bushing for 1/8" NPT to 1/4" NPT may allow a new sensor with 1/8" NPT threads to fit a M14x1.5 straight thread using the stock copper sealing washer.

Using this type adapter:

For an idiot-light sender, I think I used one from a 1968 Rambler 199-6cyclinder engine. They wanted too much for a "Volvo" sender, so I paid less than ten bucks for this sender.

I don't know which thread type Volvo used, but in back of my mind, I recall Volvo did something different...like used NPT or something like that in earlier years.

I suspect there are not that many OEM vendors, so there may be standardized sizes in oil pressure sending units.

The VDO website doesn't recognize "360-800". The Volvo part numbers, 3417000 & 3427000-1, can't be cross-referenced by VDO.
If the OEM part's characteristics could be established then a comparable replacement could be ordered, so VDO told me. The only 5-bar VDO sender with M14x1.5 threads they offer is 360-028. Can anyone confirm if this will work? BTW I have a '91. It seems the mounting hole in the block would be metric. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

360-028 is available from www.egauges.com and appears to be what you're looking for
