Buying advice for S60R/V70R Manual Transmission

Post by jcgirton »

I’ve been looking to find a 2004 - 2007 S60R (seems rare so far) or V70R (impossible to find) with a manual transmission - any advice on what to watch out for?

Depends on mileage of course. awd working (should not be able to turn the shaft by hand), clogged pcv, worn shock absorbers ($$$), control arms, slave cylinder on manual

Yes, manual R cars are rare. You'll need patience while looking. Post a new "WTB: 2004-2007 R manual" topic in Volvo Classifieds forum.
Here are my notes from buying, Stage-0 it, and owning a 2004 V70 R auto.

Post questions here or in those topics, whichever makes more sense.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

Your V70R looked really nice - I've been reading through some of the links, I've been trying to figure out what can go wrong with the AWD system, (my S60 is just FWD) - people have posted about the angle gear, the part is expensive but people posted directions to replace it and didn't make it seem like it was that bad of a job (please correct me if I'm wrong) - are there any other known issues with it? is the awd system fairly easy to work on yourself?

The manual transmission looks like it had issues with the slave cylinder but it looks like there was a fix for the part so if it has been replaced it shouldn't have any more issues? Also it doesn't look like you can really replace just the slave cylinder, if the clutch was replaced should it have the newer slave cylinder at this point?

If they replaced the slave cylinder, they had to drop the transmission so most probably they've replaced the clutch and the pressure plate (another point on the manual transmission, when the slave fails it leak fluid on the clutch but also on the pressure plate which must be replaced). If the repair was done recently, test well the clutch. If they didn't replace the pressure plate, good chances are it will need replaced. And yes, along with a clutch job on this car the slave must be replaced because even Volvo replacement slaves are known to sometimes fail again (it was a weak design)

For the awd there are several videos on Youtube, it'll give you a great idea about the repair

Don't forget about the extremely expensive 4C struts/shocks that go around 100k miles or so

Yes there are several other wear items in the AWD. Angle gear is the most common, and usually the collar goes out with the angle gear.

Here's an 05 S60R manual in Chicago, condition appears decent but no mention of suspension work done yet ... https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/ ... 01962.html
