98 v70 heater fan loud esp on defrost

Post by skloon »

As the title says- it sounds like a leafblower when I turn it to position 3 or 4 on regular heat it's not too bad but defrost it's awful- I don't drive this car so much but dug it out of a snowdrift for my wife and noticed how loud it was

Maybe lift the long plastic piece at the bottom of the windshield (no need to remove the wipers), it may be clipped at some places, and look underneath near the pass side downwards to see the blower fan: it may have trapped leaves or maybe even some mice or alike

If the fan needs lube , get it out and done. The power transistor pack will burn out if the motor is seized and that isn’t cheap

Are you actually getting any air onto the windshield? Could be the flap to deflect the air to the windshield is not working so the air not getting there at high speed in the system can cause a roar.

El crapola- the v70 has about 1/4 the airflow of the 850 is that flap a pain to access ? or should I say how much of a pain is it to access

Definitely check the underhood for leaves and junk - that area is right above the fan (you can actually see it if you remove the filter)

IF its a horrible whir it is the motor - if there are mechanical sounds Ill guess something in the fan blower cage.

I agree with abscate to check the system for obstructions. As for the manual system I am not very familair as all the cars I have owned have had ECC. What I would check is that the cables are intact. It could be a cable has just come off the levers or something simple like that. With an ECC system it would likely be a bad servo motor, but not sure on the MCC.

I don't know if your 850 has one, but the V70's
ship with an intake filter under that cowl piece.
If you've never checked it, it may be time.
