5w20 oil change in 2006 S60

Post by DianaPrince »

Had local shop do a quick oil change yesterday while my car was in for a state safety inspection. Requested synthetic blend; chick at the counter said my car couldn’t take a blend; I told her it could; she asked her manager and he said they could do it. Realized today they used 5W20 oil. Normally I get 5W30. Is this going to hurt the engine?
Volvo cars I’ve owned:
1990 240 DL
2000 S70 GLT
2006 S60 2.5T

I would say it might especially if you do a lot of interstate speed driving. Probably worse if your car is turbo and/or high mileage. Volvo still uses 5w30 in the 2018 models. June

The 20 grade is too thin for these engines who have larger tolerances than on the cars specifically designed for W20 oils. It may cause engine wear, I would replace it, just drain the oil, no need to remove the filter

0w20 is the new black it seems. At least over here.

Myself I think 30 is a bit thin for my 04, I stick with 40.
