2000 2.9l What to do? Sell or fix and keep forever.

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 2.9l What to do? Sell or fix and keep forever.

Post by dandan »

Hello MVS, Good to see you again.

I've been debating in my mind whether to finish fixing my 00 Volvo s80. Plan B is to craigslist it  .
It has 221,000 Miles on it. I bought it at 150k with approximately 75k of no recorded maintenance on the car. I kept the oil changed regularly with 6 quarts full synthetic and 1 quart lucas stabilizer. I didnt always add the stabilizer, but when I did it's lucas. :D The car was fully original minus the oil and filter. I mean everything was original, from the cabin filter to the timing belt  . That's over 200,000 miles on the timing system! I've driven this car for 71,000 miles and am sold on Volvos for some odd reason in light of all this maintenance.

Car runs good, getting proper gas mileage, etc. So far I have changed in all..

*Timing belt
*Tensioner
*Idler Roller
*Water Pump
*Serpentine Belt
*Spark Plugs (Twice since purchased @150K)
*1 Coil
*Transmission Filter and 7 quarts of fluid
*Fuel Filter
*Cabin Filter
*Oil filter and Syn Oil (20+ times since purchased)
*Fuel door hinge
*Radiator and coolant
*Air Filter (5/6 times since purchased)
*All bulbs are fresh
*Upper Engine mount

EXISTING PROBLEMS!

Front suspension has got to go. The tiniest of cracks have the oomph of the grand canyon.
Front struts needed, control arm bushing are shot and whatever else that needs to be replaced.
It pulls hard left when braking and has the tendency to jerk. I have to turn my wheel to 3 o'clock when I stop to stop straight. It also eats front tires, they both have a camber but the passenger side sticks out 2 or 3 centimeters at the bottom. The rear shocks need to be replaced as well.

The PCV system needs to be replaced and possibly along with the cam shaft seals.
Its throwing a p1330 code, guess i'll have to pull the intake solenoid off and clean/inevitably replace it. If that fails clearing the p1330 I suppose the cam shaft position sensor :?: Not sure on that one and sounds like a deep hole.

The transmission seems fine. I get some hesitation here and there but I still feel I get the response (all that the 2.9 has) when I need it.

I baby this thing when I drive, but this suspension non-sense has my brain vibrating in my skull. I do all the work myself and it doesn't seem to tough of a job but we are talking ca$h money on parts doing the job myself. I don't even want to get into the front seat re upholstery.

$300 on struts and shocks
$300 on control arms ball joints etc
$300 on pcv system
$150 on cvvt solemoid

I bought the car for $6,100 In 2010. I've just dropped a grand on the parts 10k ago. With another grand to spend, what to do? Sell and buy a shiney 2008+ S80 maybe the V8 or keep forever?

I think it will simply boil down to do you want to keep the car. If the tranny is good remember the rep that these trannys are time bombs, maybe not so much on the 2.9 but you have high mileage. The front suspension is pretty straight forword, don't forget about inner and outer tie rods. I would expect the front and rear sway bar links are also due for replacement.
I would do the glove test for the PCV before jumping in and doing the job.
With the issues you listed I see about $1600 in parts .
The vintage of your S80 makes the keep or sell a tough decision.

Old thread alert

If you put $1000 into this car the owner would have spent a total of 10 cents per mile for acquisition And running costs, incredibly cheap luxury ride.

Alas, we have to carry the burden of not knowing the outcomes of these real life dramas along with those parenting moments of ‘ what was she thinking’ as we help stuff the parts into the 55 gallon drum of waste oil

Nay, I say. The burden is not yours to carry. I ended up selling the car, and regretting it. The transmission started to slip a bit at around 265k went into limp mode once so I sold it. I did not repair the front suspension. A couple years after selling it I spotted it on craigslist with the same description about the front suspension AND slight transmission slippage and 325K+ miles on it. Probably due to not resetting the transmission in vidas/vida. Somewhere out there that thing is still bumping along. I miss it.

Wow! For a transmission proclaimed as junk by everyone not able to run beyond 40K without a rebuild, here is one driven 60K slipping! Also still going at 325K! IMPRESSIVE... I agree with Abscate that car has done it's duty. June

Indeed a true testament to the Car's refusal to quit. It will enter Volvo folk lore.

One thought for future ownership - for anyone looking at this thread. Used parts can be had for nothing. Recently I saw one poster using with great success discs and rotors. I wager you could have done your suspension for $100.
