1998 V70XC Rear Propshaft "Hanger Bearing" Replacement?

Post by shiloh51933 »

My 1998 V70XC has a bad hanger bearing(center support bearing) on the rear propellar shaft. The rubber has totally seperated from the center of the bearing and there's no slip yoke on the u joint. It looks like the u-joints are welded to the shaft and that would make it difficult to replace the hanger bearing. Has anyone managed to replace the hanger bearing on the propshaft of a P80 V70XC? If so would you mind breaking it down?

The only way I know to do it is to send it off to a place like Colorado Drive shaft. The way it is made I think the only way to do it is to cut the shaft and weld it back together. I had the same thing happen about a month ago and I just removed it and it will stay that way.

It makes a heck of a racket when that happens. I thought about trying to limp it home and after driving about 20 feet I decided to call the tow truck.

Colorado Driveshaft is the way to go. I don't think anyone else has attempted to repair the center bearing.

I believe YouTube has a video on this. Watch it to see if it is applicable to your model. I know one can now source the parts on Ebay, at least for the newer models.

The design is pretty standard to all driveshafts, just a matter of getting parts.

On rwd hanger bearing replacement is fairly common, what a waste of a good propshaft they made it difficult for home tech.

On this propshaft there's no slip joint, normally the U joint is connected to a slip joint rt b4 the hanger bearing. They welded the u-joints to the shaft, so you can't get hanger bearing off without cutting. If you cut it has to be re-welded and rebalanced ...I don't have the machine equipment for that.

To add further - see this video for how to get bearing off:

Although for a different car if the bearing is seized on, just cut.

That's a video for a RWD Volvo 240 or 540, that's definitely not a V70XC propshaft.

Bearing isn't seized, if you read some of my Post I stated that there's no slip joint to remove original hanger bearing and press a new hanger bearing on. I would have to cut the driveshaft all the way through to remove hanger bearing, then reweld the shaft back together then have a balancing machine to rebalance shaft after. I don't know about you but I don't own a machine shop. I'm not trying to be a wiseguy...I appreciate your effort.
