evap canister replacement

The evap carbon filter canister on my 95 850 non-turbo fell off and broke apart while i was driving to work.
When i stopped part of it was still hanging under the front end by three hoses.

I found out that the zip tie that secured the canister had broke.
I removed what was left and plugged the hoses.

The canister (pn 1276694) is no longer available from Volvo or other parts dealer.

Is it possible to replace it with a newer type canister?
Mine has three fittings for fuel tank, vacuum and purge hoses.
4th fitting is capped.
Car seems to run OK without it so do I even need to replace it?

Not sure on your year, but the newer models will throw a code. I would guess yours will sooner or later.

Were it me I would find a used one and put it in as I hate knowing things are wrong on the car. Check a wrecker, Craigslist or maybe someone on the forum will offer one up for postage.

My evap system was nearly non existent when I got my 95. None of the hoses actually connected all the way through the whole system. All the soft rubber bits completely rotted away. Never threw a code. I repaired it simply because I cannot tolerate my cars to operate under 100%. Canister was okay but all the hoses had to be completely replaced.

You could plug the two smaller hoses at their source which I believe is off the intake manifold. The larger hose is the line to the tank. So you'd need to plug that as well.

I am sure that you could retrofit one of the newer designs onto the current system they do the same thing. They have the correct ports.

Personally, I'd just grab a used one from a junker. $200 is kinda $$$ for that.
