AWD V70 AW50-42LE replacement from an 850 T5

Post by Twopointfourturbo » Mon Jul 30, 2018 4:01 am

Hi, I am looking to replace the automatic transmission in my 1999 Volvo V70 2.4T AWD (Engine model B5244T). After prolonged trans fluid draining there was still fine metallic parts present in the oil and the OBDII was throwing up an ECM-530D and unfortunately a TCM-002B error code. I found another AW50-42 LE auto box from a 1996 Volvo 850 T5 with ca. 90000 miles on it. As far as I know both cars use the same AW50-42LE, however I heard that there was a difference between the auto boxes according to if the car had a high pressure or low pressure turbo. In addition, my V70 had a software update done by its first owner, does that complicate problems further, and what are your opinions on the feasability of this installation? Does the 850 T5 auto easily fit in a 1st gen AWD V70? And should I immediately do a fluid replacement as soon as I get my hands on the new box?

1999 was a big change year as the car went completely electronic engine management. I doubt you can get an earlier Transmission control module to work with the ME7 engine control module, so wait until you find someone who has done that swap specifically

But isn't the TCM and ECM seperate from the trans and engine and contained on the side of the engine bay? The transmission itself dosen't have the TCM installed internally so if I would swap out the old and install the new trans the TCM of the original gearbox should be managing it...

The ECM on a 1999 is tied to the VIN number. I don't know about the TCM or how it talks to the ECM on a 1999. If you swap ECMs between two 1999 with identical part numbers, they won't work. Definitely make sure you talk to someone who knows this system before spending a lot of money on parts!

I wasn't planning on swapping ECMs, just the transmission unit itself, not planning on touching the TCM or ECM if I can't help it. In the meantime I read another MVS post concerning the difficulties of pre-1999 and post-1999 AW50 problems:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35393
And from what jimmy57 says, by replacing the 2 older analog speed sensors on the 850's replacement trans with the 1999/TCM compatible digital speed speed sensors "should" help with the swap. Let's hope so...

Are you planning to run the AWD? Not sure the FWD and AWD outputs can be used on an AWD car. You will also need to use the different drive axle if you plan to run the car in FWD only although it may be possible to re-use the AWD RH axle with the FWD. Check the axle diameters and the number of splines on the axle end of the shaft.

Thanks Neil. Could you clarify what you meant with "not being sure if FWD and AWD outputs can be used on an AWD car"? The 850 T5 and my V70 both have AWD and turbo engines but I am aware of the electronic differences as mentioned above. And yes I am planning on running the AWD, since the gearbox is also from an AWD model - there are also some others who claim that swapping an AW50 should be fine mechanically viewtopic.php?t=37597.
I will check up on those axle diameters though.

I wasn't aware the 850 T5 was an AWD car. Over here we did not get the 850 T5 AWD. We got a 850 (GLT) AWD with the LPT and even then only in Canada if I recall and that was only in 1997 which I always understood was the first year of P80 AWD?

The AWD transmission has a collar on the output to the RH side to drive the angle gear which also needs to bolt to the side of the transmission. As I am almost 100% certain the 96 850 T5 (which may be a 97 MY in North America) is not AWD. I owned a 98 V70 T5 in Europe and it was a FWD only car. We always have these market differences.

So please re-check you have the 850 info is correct. I can be wrong (so my wife tells me!).

Whoops, yeah I made a mistake. The 850 was available in AWD but not with an auto nor as a T5. The seller of the trans was not sure about the 850 being either a T5 or AWD then from what he told me. Good thing I didnt buy the trans at asking price then. I am considering bringing the original trans to a nearby automatic specialist to rebuld it otherwise, the hassle of sourcing and shipping a good replacement trans might not be worth it.

That's ok. Glad you caught it before buying. Advantage of a re-built trans is you have a guarantee and a known entity. It is a lot of work to do this trans removal so makes it easier when you are fitting a known working trans.

You may want to consider swapping the RMS whole the trans is out. $20 part but 10+ hrs to fit but little time when the trans is out.
