Hookup an Automotive logic probe.
With key on, probe the positive side of coil, you should see a steady high.
Move the probe to the negative side of the coil, have somebody crank the engine, you should see pulses from the ECM.

Been awhile, sorry for the delay...back at this beast, got a code reader, showed the crank sensor was bad, ordered a new one, went to install it and when I pulled the old crank sensor, the end of it was broken off!....replaced it and car would start, but would die shortly; can keep it running @ 3000 + rpms but try to let it idle and it dies....put the code reader back on it and it said the crank sensor was bad, low voltage circuit A...pulled it out again, checked the ohms and it is within specs. now I am really puzzled. I got a bore scope and put it down the crank sensor hole to see what the tone ring looked like. Had my brother wrench the engine over and saw that the tone ring has gouges and what looks like bits of metal shavings stuck between some of the ridges of the tone ring...I am surmising that the bits of the starter teeth and housing were lost inside the bell housing and got tossed around, wedged in places they shouldn't...Now I am contemplating cutting an access hole in the bell housing and using a Dremel tool to "fix" the tone ring. does this seem like a workable idea?....I really am unsure of pulling the engine and trans to replace the tone ring.

It’s 10 hours to pull trans and fix right.
Paying yourself 25/hour that’s about 250 in cost
Balance that against the cost of cracking the bell housing and turning your Car into a $250 scrap pile...

What is this tone ring? I thought that was what was what the ABS sensors have on the wheel hubs. Are we talking about the starter pinion ring/gear? If so is it actually broken with missing teeth or is there some ground remnants of the missing pieces of the crank sensor?
If the latter is the issue, you could try to remove the starter motor and turn the engine by hand at the crank pulley and clean the teeth to see how bad they are. It may save you pulling the trans as you may be able to clean the teeth enough for it to work. You may also want to check the condition of the teeth on the starter as well.
Neil.
