I replaced the cabin blower fan today even though I was a bit pressed for time.
When I removed the old fan, I saw about 4-5 fl oz of water at the bottom of the white duct where the fan sits. The carpet on both sides is dry, and I haven't had any loss of coolant so I'm fairly certain it was only rain water.
I just soaked it up and wiped off the duct, but now I wonder why there was water there at all. I guess it must have come in through the intake port, which on my budget 850 isn't fitted with a pollen filter. No air conditioning in this car either.
Is there a drain pipe that might be blocked on my car? I wish I had had the time to thoroughly investigate when I was in there today as I don't feel entirely comfortable leaving it as it is now so I will be going back in when I can.
I welcome any hints/ideas you may have.

Check the drains in the corner of the wells in front of the windshield where the wiper motor sits and the cabin air intake is. There are 2 fitted, one each end that run into the plastic drains at the front of that area and down to the ground.
To do this correctly, you need to remove the plastic cover which means the wiper arms have to come off.

Thanks, Neil.
I haven't been able to check the drains yet as the radiator fan decided to quit on me two days ago resulting in overheating and loss of 3 quarts of coolant. So I'm now sourcing a new Volvo ECT sensor and a used fan.
It's about time for a bigger overhaul anyway, the right hand wiper arm is wobbly and I've never gotten round to fixing the loose connection on the knock sensor.

I think I've sorted the water problem. The drains were fine, but there was a build-up of old composting leaves that allowed for water to seap through the rubber barrier between the shroud and the opening to the duct. Sorry, no pictures this time.
Also managed to swap out the burned coolant fan and install a second-hand wiper assembly. No more wobbling wiper arms
I didn't have time to fix the knock sensor problem, will do that when I receive the ECT in the mail.
