I just did mine two weeks ago, this CTA tool did make the work really easy. I did not use a counterhold tool, it went just fine.
Those 21mm bolts were quite hard to unscrew!

I'm inspired by your success. Any detail to compare between driver's and passenger side procedure.Antoine240bk wrote: ↑09 Mar 2019, 10:35 I just did mine two weeks ago, this CTA tool did make the work really easy. I did not use a counterhold tool, it went just fine.

Thanks XHeart placed it in my shopping list.. lately Amazon marketplace officially opened in Australia. As a result we can no longer order to Australian addresses from Amazon.com though I can send to a friend or freight forwarder in USA. My freight forwarder lives in Portland Oregon so perfect for IPD orders.

IPD Portland is indeed a premium source for Volvo DIYers. A valuable learning resource for maintenance tips https://www.ipdusa.com/techtips.asp.

I did soaked them with a mix of ATF and Acetone for almost a week. The right one took force but was easy to break free, the left one was a real pain as someone already tried to undo the screw and round it up, it took me time but with a locking plier on the screw and another one on the tie rod i did break it. My car is a 2005 with Dstc i had to count carefully unscrewing the outer tie rods to not trigger the SAS Anti skid during the reassembly. Anyway after the alignment shop the Anti skid popped up, a simple reset (calibration) turning the steering wheel 2 & half right and left then full lock either way, the message cleared. All good seems then!xHeart wrote: ↑09 Mar 2019, 14:08I'm inspired by your success. The tightening torque is, IIRC, 100nm. When breaking the tie rod loose, you will need even more torque. If no counterhold is used, the innards of the steering rack have to withstand the force you exert. Using a makeshift counterhold bears the risk of causing scratches which might break the seals too. So, if you're unlucky (and of course I hope, Antoine, that you'll be fine!), that might cause damage to the seal or other parts of the rack. Given the cost in labor and money of fixing a broken rack, it seems to me that some caution is advisable.Antoine240bk wrote: ↑09 Mar 2019, 10:35 I just did mine two weeks ago, this CTA tool did make the work really easy. What about buying the counterhold (~100USD) and passing it on in the classifieds section of the forums or ebay? Total cost won't be much and you'll be safe.

Thank you for brining it up DrDan. I came across following pix and corresponding thread. Unless you say otherwise, I'll check eBay for the counterhold tool.DrDan wrote: ↑11 Mar 2019, 04:16 The tightening torque is, IIRC, 100nm.
