volvo 240 overheating?
The car is overheating. Don't know why it is overheating? Changed the thermostat, water pump, coolent and the problem stays persistant. Oil is still blowing under the cap and cap was replaced recently. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks Patty

What year is the car, engine type and how many miles on it?
Are you losing coolant when it overheats?
Why did you change the items you did and when was this done?
What type of cooling fan is fitted to the radiator. There are two types - electric and viscous coupling. The former can stop working if the sensor fails. The latter usually do not give much trouble but they have been known to lose the oil that is inside them.
Post back with the answers and any other details you think are relevant and we shall try to help.

This could be related to the overheating. How much oil is coming out? Is it just a trace or is it a large amount?Oil is still blowing under the cap and cap was replaced recently.

For the oil blowing out you have a plugged flame trap. These are available very cheaply (about $2 fpcgroton or more at dealer) It is located between the 3 and forth intake runner (two big hoses one little hose flame trap located inside) Is your car really overheating or is the temperature gage just shooting up to hot even when engine has not warmed up yet? If so you have a bad "temperature compensation board" which can be replaced for about $70 but you are better off removing it (you will have to search for instructions) and you will get actual temp on gage then. If your car is really overheating then check coolant, check belt that turns fan, if it is loose this could be the problem.

FCPGroton has a "jumper" fix for correcting a common dashboard problem that causes the temp gauge to go kafluey.
Costs about 15 bucks.

Prior owner of '83 and '89 240's
We've had three Volvos, two of them 240's. I've replaced the radiators in all three to resolve overheating problems. The radiators are relatively cheap (especially compared to a cooked engine) and are the usual cause of a host of problems.
