1999 S70 M56 Manual transmission shaft seal 9143911 6843481 size question

Hi folks,

I have a 1999 NA 5 speed.

I was thinking about doing a fluid change on my 5 speed this spring and as part of that I was thinking about replacing the seals between the drive shafts and the transmission.

Why? only because they are 20 years old.
However, in looking for parts there seems to be two versions of the seals.
1) OD 41mm
2) OD 44 mm

However I can't figure out if this is a difference in certain models, body numbers, left vs right, etc.

a few sites say to measure what is in the car now which I realize I can do but I can really only do that after removing the seals and I'd like to have the seals on hand before I do that.

Does anyone know any details about this?

The shafts are different diameter so almost certainly the two seals are different

I now realize my mistake. I can't read..

That diagram is what confused me
It clearly shows there is a RH and LH variant.

However, I thought the 120XXXX numbers were the part numbers and the three part numbers for the RH variant are actually also listed as the last three part numbers for the LH variant as well.

And I totally missed the "Part Number" column and that clearly shows two different part numbers.

But according to some parts sites, that 9143911 doesn't fit my car.

When you did your job highlighted in the post, did you replace the seals and were they really different sizes?

the 9143911 is supposedly 75mm OD and that's a lot bigger than the other side.

Oh I should have mentioned that since one side is supposedly 34mm bigger than the other, that will be easy for me to see/measure . I'll do that this weekend and let people know.

I found no resolution to this besides measuring the seal that comes off your car. The input shaft seal on my 99 T5 was 41mm. Not sure if the input shaft changed at some point or what.

You do have to pull the gearbox off the engine and remove the slave cylinder to measure the old seal, so if you want to minimize time off the road, you're either spending the money on express shipping or buying both seals ahead of time. Fortunately they're not very expensive.

Oh - you're talking about axle seals. I think, regarding the 41mm vs 44mm question, that you may be looking at input shaft seals.
