Back to the drawing board.

The vacuum hose that goes back under the intake manifold feels hard and crumbly to the touch. I am sure it will break apart if I pull on it. This is maybe the issue? I might replace it if I can figure out where the other end goes.

Find the vacuum diagram under the hood.

I’m guessing it ends up at the purge valve and has another leg to the snorkel just before the turbo

This seems to be the issue. One hose was just gone!
The diagram does not seem to match the actual hoses the car has. The hose that broke off went over to the air box thermostat.
I plugged that opening and my long term fuel trim is headed down from 24 and seems to be down to about 8 right now. I already bolted that flap in the full cold position.
I still need to replace the other hose too before it breaks off. Note to self - some things die from old age, not mileage. The car currently has 65,000 miles.

The air box thermostat hose isn’t critical but, yes, you should replace every piece of vacuum tube on a 20 year old car.

The air box hose runs to a connection on the air cleaner, then another hose runs from the same place down to the air door. One is usually white and the other black.
