Pinging sound 1998 V70R

Post by mt98t5 »

When I turn the wheel and back up I hear a metallic ping. When I turn the wheel back to center and drive forward it happens once more. No noises when driving or turning, only when backing up and turning and then driving forward. It doesn't do this when going in reverse without turning the wheel or driving forward without turning the wheel, just when I back out of my driveway and take off. Thoughts?

I would guess that it is either sway bar end link or something in your steering rack.

More likely the viscous coupling. Check the front bearing on it.

Thanks for the replies. I can replicate the sound every time by turning while backing up and then straightening the wheel when going forward. Do I need to remove the coupling to check the bearing?

Yes you do, but you may be able to feel the bearing wear by jacking all 4 wheels off the floor and turning the prop-shaft. Realistically though removing the prop-shaft from the viscous coupling and then the coupling itself is the best way. In my case once the VC was removed from the carrier the bearing balls just fell out.
