'99 Bastard - ATF choice

Post by wizechatmgr »

I just came across an interesting thread... https://community.fmca.com/topic/3171-r ... er/page/2/

If I remember correctly hzjcm8 is a guy who formerly designed/tested ATF formulations for a major auto player in industry - possibly Allison or GM...

"PS: Note to forum members. Please do not go nuts with a multitude of questions about seals and fluids. Trust me on this. If your system, be it RV, automobile, truck, equipment, etc., calls for a DEXRON-VI approved fluid, then use a DEXRON-VI approved fluid. If, on the other hand, your Owner's Manual calls for a DEXRON-III approved fluid (which would be the case for most systems manufactured prior to 2006), then you're best off using one of the Allison TES-295 approved synthetic fluids because the Allison spec includes the Viton seals test. I say this because GM no longer approves DEXRON-III products and most on the market today are unlicensed products. Most will say "D3M" or something similar since they can't legally use the DEXRON trademark."

I've been looking at the ATF I've been using which I've been having good luck with, Castrol TransMax (Castrol 03518) which is a DEX IIIH/MERC standard meeting fluid. What I'm wondering is - do we have Viton seals in the AWD transmission in the '99 V70 AWD/XC model?

In 2006 I worked as a salesman for a furniture company. My job was to do Seasonal Road Shows @ Costco and on the off season we would deliver. Yes, customers were willing to wait. Did we have smart phones at that time (my first one was 4 years ago, really)? The company truck would only do 60 mph rarely 65 unloaded.

After taking the truck to Golden Gate Truck Center in Oakland for a trans-flush with a fluid I provided did it tap out at 70 mph ungoverned. Driving 200 miles a day for deliveries lasted all day and then some. The Transmission was an Allison. TFDM - TransFluidsDoesMatter!

I'm running Dex VI in all my slush boxes. No leaks, no fouls, no errors.

Good shifting and performance.

Yeah, was looking into 5 gallons of some synthetic Dex VI. Contacted company and they say it won't be an issue if it did have those seals. Need to flush the latest potential chocolate milk concoction out.

Yikes. You aren’t getting coolant ATF mix are you, or did you just mean chocolate milk aged ATF?

If you do stay with Dex VI (ValvolineMaxlife) you will be in synch with the supply depot.

No, just the chunky stuff we removed before. I fully expect we'll be removing a bit more that managed to be freed but that we'll have massive improvement. At some point may debate removing the pan to replace the filter.
