2007 S80 OE Ignition Coil - OE manufacturer?

Post by 2007S80 »

Hi all, my first post.

Do you by chance know who the OE manufacturer is for ignition coils on a 2007 S80 with the 3.2 engine?

I recently purchased an S80 3.2 with 140k and the #6 ignition coil recently failed. The Volvo dealer replaced all the plugs and the #6 coil only. Just looking to save a few bucks while replacing the other 5 coils.

Thanks!!

To answer your question: Denso

I did recently buy a coil but it just sits on my shelf.

I own two 3.2s and so far I’ve replaced zero coils

There is evidence that suggests that coil failures are related to a Thermostat failure and/or worn spark plugs

Thanks Paul! I recently purchased a 2007 S80 3.2 with 140k miles. I put another 3k miles on it in a month and then had the #6 coil fail. Apparently the previous owner, despite doing all other maintenance at a Volvo dealership, didn’t do the coils. The dealership replaced the #6 coil and all of the spark plugs.

I ended up just buying five more Volvo coils through FCP Euro. My brother owns his own repair shop so I’m going to have him throw them on as well as a new Fuel Pressure Sensor.

Welcome to the S80 P3 team.

I bought a 2010 S80 3.2 almost a year ago for my Son to drive to work.

I've owned since new a 2008 LR2 (a Land Rover based on the Volvo drive train)

As for the Thermostat it is not considered a maintenance item by Volvo and it is know to fail in about 10 years or 100K miles in a mild climate (sooner if you live somewhere tropical)

I would be shocked if your thermostat is original and not broken. (Note: the failed thermostat may not set a check engine light, my S80 thermostat was broken but there were no symptoms)

If you have the maintenance records from the previous owner then you can use that to determine what needs to be looked after.

One last thought, I highly recommend that you use Denso iridium spark plugs

For my LR2 I installed

Denso (5344) IKH20 Iridium Power Spark Plug at 50,000 miles

Denso (5344) IKH20 Iridium Power Spark Plug again at 100,000 miles

For my S80 I installed

Denso (5344) IKH20 Iridium Power Spark Plug at 125,000 miles (when I bought the S80)

The next time I change plugs I will be using

Denso (4704) IKH20TT Iridium TT with a .040" Gap

The TT (Twin Tip) has two fine wires.

Good Luck

Paul, thanks for the tips! The dealership put Volvo spark plugs in so I’m good to go there (I would have preferred to purchase them on my own as they were marked up significantly).

I wish I had the technical know-how to work on my car myself, but am glad my brother lends a hand.
