Volvo S80 MY00 backlight on the steering wheel

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Volvo S80 MY00 backlight on the steering wheel

Post by Tarkin »

Hello,
I have Volvo S80 MY00 TDI with multifunction steering wheel - cruise control, volume etc...
But it doesnt have backlight on the buttons. Is it some way how to adapt it to backlight function.

I tried to get steering wheel ring with connectors for buttons with backlight and buttons. But I found a problem under the ring. It is not compatibile with PCB under.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you

My 2004 are backlit to match dash buttons. I think my 2002 S80 buttons were too though I can't 100% remember. So maybe install a set off a 04 or perhaps a connection is bad on yours that powers the backlighting? If I think of it tonight I'll take a picture. June

Hello thank you for response. But there is a problem. I tried to connect buttons from MY2004 with backlight, but the ring under the steering wheel is for 2 pins airbag - first problem. Second problem is under the new ring. There is a connector in PCB for ring which is not compatible.

So... maybe there is a option, but even with that PCB replacement, but I dont know what is under.

So the 2000 never were lit then. My father's last couple of Town Cars had the lights under the window switch go out variously. I was hoping for your sake maybe the lights had gone out. Thus far all dash/switches, both door and steering wheel/and console still work. Being as Ford same era and Ford owning Volvo in 04 either I am lucky or Volvo just did it better. June

Here are the things that light up on my 2004 S80 I didn't bother photographing the rear doors and passenger door switches but they light too. June

The no backlights on the steering wheel drove me nuts so I bought an 04 wheel and had the same issue with the wiring harness not being compatible so I pulled the lit buttons out of the 04 wheel and installed them in the 00 wheel, grabbed power from another source inside the wheel. I think maybe the radio control and lit the leds that way. It was a bit messy but easy and it's been functioning now for 9 years no issues.
