That color looks incredible in person... matches the Neptunes very nicely!

On Sunday I attempted to change my thermostat and discovered that some gorilla had been in there before. The first torx socket I tried wasn't as good a fit as it should have been and by the time I tried a better one the damage had been done. The bolts resisted all attempts to undo them until the inevitable happened.

I tried taking the housing off the spares car, but soon realised that the 10V version is different. The local breaker had no 5 pot Volvos in at all so I had no option but to bite the bullet and order a new casing from Scandix. Unfortunately that left me without a car for the holidays.

Yesterday I decided to take the housing off one of the V40s in the breaker's yard and see if it would fit. It turns out that the holes are in the same place but the V40 has a fatter temperature sender, which means the boss fouls the 850's inlet manifold. I attacked the boss with a file as much as I dared and managed to create a gap. The next problem was how to connect the V40 temperature sender into the 850's wiring. I cut the plug off the spares car and soldered it on. Heating the sender with a blowtorch made the temperature gauge rise so I put heatshrink on and put it all together. I used hex headed bolts and didn't use a 6 foot pipe to tighten them, so I hope it'll come apart easily when required.

Amazingly it seems to be holding water and the temperature gauge is behaving as it should. Once the correct bits arrive I'll put it all back the way it should be but I'm just glad that I can actually use the car. I was quite despondent when I broke it.

On the plus side the heater seems to be working better, which was the reason for changing the thermostat in the first place, it would have been quite galling if I'd broken it by trying to fix it when it wasn't broken.

Just finished doing my own head gasket on my 99 s70 na m56 and today decided to test my compression. I got even compression across all 5! Woo

I also taught my Fiance to drive stick in the Volvo and she drove us on the street about 15 minutes across town. She was so pissed at me when she stalled it 5-6 times at a green light, but it was worth it.

Well done!

Let her keep at it, she'll laugh too eventually!

Get her into a big empty parking lot if she needs practice with the starting off. No traffic or pressure.

Make sure your parking brake stays adjusted and working well , too. MASS DOT looks at these now pretty closely , I think.

While I grabbed photos of your air motor, I noticed the purge valve was chattering again on Evita the S70 so I swapped in my new one. ( previously ordered due to chatter at 156k$

An old friend came to visit today... I need to diagnose a P0300, P0305 misfire issue and do the timing belt, water pump, and some other work in preparation for a 19T.

Always nice to see my old GLT!

Man, I hate when people bring me junk parts. Hate to tell him it'll be back for a cylinder head in two months... the tensioner won't even adjust properly to install it.

He insists on using them, so whatever!

It's a nasty trap... it often ends in bent valves, shredded belts, leaking hoses, degrading engine mounts, and boxes in your trash can labeled "ÜRO Parts".

But the car's running great, so that's good at least!
