The typical yellow arrow flashing problem and it’s causes
Along with flashing arrow also winter , econo and sport light flashes as well. Winter mode same
As flashing arrow lymp mode or 2nd gear take off. At one time i seen a code for wrong gear from the obd codes.. Somewhere I read key on and off with rapid selector movement to remind module what gear it was in and that worked for awhile. To clear up the limp mode problem. Car will take off in first again. But now the error is more persistence to go away. I heard module on trans gets dirty and causes problems like this.

Well the most common cause is a dirty PNP switch. Rowing the shifter back and forth helps clean it up and it sounds like you did that and had some initial success. Based on that I would recommend removing the PNP switch and cleaning up the insides and then reinstalling it.

I don't think you mentioned what year your 850 is but if its a 95 or earlier then you can read the transmission codes and get a better idea of what the problem is. If it is a 96 or later you'll have to have the codes read at a Volvo dealer or repair shop.
