The HPT can stay competitive with the LPT in fuel economy if you keep the rpms down in the 2000-2500 range - my T5M gets about 25 mpg at 65-70, but if I dial back to 60 mph it goes up to 28mpg.
My P2 NA beats the snot out of it, though, with 33mpg at 70 mph.

Ouch... best I get is 19.3 MPG. That was yesterday with some highway driving. My brother's S60 2.4T averages around 23.4 MPG but the transmission is AWFUL. It's so clunky and uncertain. That's after 2-3 fluid changes, fluid counter and adaptation reset, and a new B4 servo cover.
LPT is fine to upgrade, but you have to be careful about going over the 300-350 hp range. The 83mm bore blocks are known to crack liners. Much less of a problem with the 81mm HPT blocks.
What I've done with this car is pretty much as far as I'd go with an LPT. The few things I would add (and the owner wants to add, I think and hope) are a larger intercooler (do88 or Snabb), larger intake elbow (Snabb), and a full exhaust (which he is having custom made). He's doing a straight pipe, but I'd keep a high flow cat and a decent sounding muffler... but that's purely preference. I like aggressive and a little loud, but not too loud. A straight piped 5 cylinder is unbearably loud... especially the NA!
Then, most importantly an M56 swap

Can you take some photos of the V70 you worked on? Have you already? Video too. If you have time/access and if the owner ok's it of course.
Or... he's on here...
I'll email him and ask this.
This entire post is me thinking out loud.

Well enjoy it while young, bdub.

Yeah, fortunately my current "job" allows the horrible gas mileage... if I had to commute, I'd go buy a Golf Sportwagen TDI. You can drive those aggressively and still average close to 40 MPG!

I'm sure he has some or can take some. Here's one from last year when I was still daily-ing it.
...and it got way better gas mileage than my V70R.

Is there a thread on here about how to change to a twin setup? Is twin seq turbo same as twin scroll as listed for your S40 in your signature?RickHaleParker wrote: ↑20 Feb 2020, 12:41A LPT is better for city driving and fuel economy, it has more spunk around town.
HPT is the hot rod turbo, it not as spunky in normal driving but it roars, impresses or scare the dickens chickens when you floor it.
If you want better daily drivability and fuel economy ... LPT.
If you impress somebody that is into performance or scare the dickens out of somebody that is not ... HPT.
If you want the best of both worlds, Twin Sequential Turbochargers, one LPT and one HPT. Produces boot over a wider RPM range.

All i did was cut the muffler off. Its actually not loud for me unless i keep it at 2500-2700rpm and even then it doesnt get very loud. Im not sure i ever want to put an aftermarket exhaust on because i love the factory Volvo sound. I dont have the money to be doing any fancy work. I think the turbo upgrade will be a few years from now. And at some point itd be cool to do an M56 swap, if not an M66. Is the M66 possible on a 1998 2.4?bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑20 Feb 2020, 18:20 Ouch... best I get is 19.3 MPG. That was yesterday with some highway driving. Twin scroll is one turbo with two scrolls not Twin Turbo ( Two Turbos ). The X40 came with a Twin Scroll Turbo.
I do not know of anybody that has gone through the trouble of converting a Volvo to twin sequential turbos.
