98 XC:all electronics shut off while driving

Post by CIK7 »

This past Saturday (6/6), I left my car running for 4 hours with AC on for my dog while I went through the junk yard looting a 98 V70 glt and 99 s70 t5. I finally headed home with AC still on. About 25 miles down the road, I showed down to take the clover leaf to the next road. when I slowed down mostly, all electronics shut off and immediately turned back on. About 2 miles down the road it happened again but for about 1 second. then today (6/8) I was headed out to parents house and the electronics shut off for about 5 secs. I was unable to use gas, lights were off. I have a power steering and oil leak. I'm questioning if I should have spent that money on another car instead of on more parts for this car and other stuff. please help me ASAP.

Sounds much like the electrical part of the ignition switch is going bad, which is very common. Basically all of the factory ones have failed or will soon. Test by jiggling the key or by easing the key back and forth, while idling. Has it ever been replaced? Did you grab one from the junker?

Also check the B+ cable up in the kidney shaped main fuse box. The are bad for melting and hide it well where they come into the bottom side of the box. Not a 100% surefire clue is the nut and cable end will oxidise.

Just the electrical portion not the whole thing, it's an easy job. This is the part for your 98 V70: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 90-9447804
Only use the Volvo branded part for this. Pulling one from the junkyard is reasonable to assume it is working now, but realize it could go bad again. If you're looking for one at the junkyard, note carefully which cars have the asme one. They are listed on the "fitment" tab of that link at FCP.

How to replace it: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=55868

Remember we are not certain it's the electrical portion of the ignition switch, but it is a good chance. Worth doing some troubleshooting.

In what shape is a battery?
You will need to perform a voltage drop test and aternator output when everything is warmed up(after about 30min.of driving),without turning the engine off.
