Volvo 850 Windshield Replacement

Does anyone have instructions on how to remove and replace my windshield? I am going to the bone yard tomorrow. Thanks, Steve

It's just muscle work and you have to have the right adhesive. Also, You have to be careful of the SRS sensor that sits at the base of it.

Best left to a glass shop to install IMO
It's a 15 minute install so it won't cost an arm and a leg

Actually, I agree with JRL on this one. The guy who did my 850 and S70 windshields several years ago was a real pro...handled the glass himself (no help from others) and he had them in in just about 15 minutes. It would have taken me half a day and I would have been worried if I had done it right.

I put one in my 1995 850. It was not too hard..
Take the trim off around the windshield,open the hood to take off the plastic and windshield wiper arms. You can get a piano wire or they make a special tool with a cutter where you need to cut the mastic to windshield connection. This is the hardest part. I used the wire method. You have to break the seal and get the wire through and you pull the wire around the windshied to cut the mastic. Now you go inside the car and you can push the windshield out with your feet.
Once out ,get a razor knife to get the existing mastic left on the windshield frame smooth. You just want it smmoth,Do not try to get it to the metal. Before you put any mastic down you can try to fit the windshield in the opening. There are a few dent things that you winshield sits on. I got 2 tubes of this black windshild caulking from where I purchased the windshield. Lay a thick even bead around the frame on the car and place the windshield in. Press down around the edge of the windshiel to get complete seal. Took about 1 1/2 hours.

Its downright strange how some of these topics come up right as I am experiencing one thing or another...
I just had my windshield replaced today on my 97 850. (broke it removing trim to paint). I had it done by a glass company, because I have insurance, and a $100 deductable., so it cost me $100.00.
The best part of having a company do it is, if anything scews up, they fix....like leaks or wind noise...or if it somehow gets cracked during the job, etc.

After the accident that deployed my airbags, and spidered my windshield, I tried to put the car back into shape quickly and at a reasonable expense.

I removed a windshield at the Pick and pull yard and it's not difficult on a parts car when you don't care about the trim and paint, but the glass installers have the correct tools to get it out quickly and cleanly.
So after bringing home the windshield from the parts yard, I found it to have wiper scratches I did not want to deal with in night time driving situations. I bought replacement glass and it was done right.

Bottom line, I didn't want to do to my car what I did to the donor car, and secondly, I was much happier with flawless glass for about $120. Install was $80. More than fair for something that is a structural and safety component.

This was probably the only new part I purchased in order to get my car on the road again.
By the way, I still have the one that I removed myself from the parts yard. They don't ship well though.

Please, for the safety of you and your passengers, pay a reputable glass shop to install the glass.
I install auto glass for a living, and see the "home spun" installs. The urethane adhesive needs to bond to both the car and the glass to protect passengers in crash events. If it isn't primed correctly or the urethane hasn't set, it won't retain in the car.
Plus, if you scratch the metal and don't prime it with primer from the urethane mfg of the adhesive you are using, you can get rust or a poor bond.
Some things are best left to the professionals.

I think the OP was going to get a used windshield from the wreckers .

I was a mechanic for years and got very good at doing my own body and paint work as I have restored several cars over the years (non recently) although the S70 will be pretty much a mechanical resto and a few other things but it don't get easier as you get older

One thing I never did attempt was replacing a windshield and as the fellow says in the post above mine.... " best left to the pros"

These windshields are getting harder to find at least in Florida. I have called 3 shops and none of them can get a front windshield for my 850. I did find one at the dealership after a tip from one of the shops but none of the shops I have called will install it because they only install glass they have sold (in case they break it during install I suppose).

Waiting on a quote from the dealer to do the install. That will determine which route I go. Wanted to give anyone else who winds up here in the same boat a heads up.
