please post mvs link to timing belt tensioner VIN thread; unknown if it is hydraulic or mechanical

Post by CIK7 »

i dont know if my tb tensioner is hydraulic or mechanical. there are only thousands of threads and responses about timing belt tensioners and as usual i cant find the thread that has the part numbers listed. i believe it goes by VIN code and i want to replace mine before putting new engine in. please help me. i thought it would be in Major Repair topics but so many threads plus repeats.
BTW I just purchased my new 2.3L, I believe before noon. excited!

I may be wrong, but I thought that there were only 2 options. Earlier cars up until some random time in 98 with hydraulic tensioner and mechanical tensioners. Maybe I am about to learn something new?!

It goes by engine number . Not VIN code

There is a thread with the break I will search for

Your engine number is in a sticker on the timing belt cover , and also stenciled into the block near the water pipe

If you take off the top timing cover (The one with the clips), I bet you have enough space to look down and see if there is a mechanical tensioner or not.
if yes, you have one.. if not.. hydraulic (in a different location).

Thesis

If you timing marks are at the top of the timing cover you have mechanic tensioner

If they are at roughly 1330 and 1030 clock positions on the timing cover, you have hydraulic tensioner

If you have VVT, you have mechanical

If you have coil on plug, you have mechanical

water pipe (where the thermostat is) or did you mean to say water pump? and 1998 p80s didnt have coil on plug until ford took over i thought. only on 960/sv90.

the tensioner i have is visible by pulling away the front wheel well cover next to crank. im guessing this could be different on my new t5 engine but same year and model (v70)

That’s hydraulic. It’s 10 cm long cylinder where as the mechanical one looks like a pulley
